Some time ago, much of what used to be called folk-rock/singer/songwriter and light pop/rock music retreated to Nashville and Austin and started to be considered as vaguely country in style. If Cross Canadian Ragweed's major-label debut album is to be taken as an example, what used to be thought of as mainstream or classic rock is doing much the same thing. The Oklahoma-based rock quartet, who issued four low-budget albums independently, is here working for a new Nashville entity called Universal South, an imprint of the Universal Music Group run by Tony Brown, who brought such mavericks as Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle to Universal's MCA Records when he was there, and Tim DuBois, formerly of Arista Nashville and a proponent of Texas songwriters like Robert Earl Keen. In Cross Canadian Ragweed, they have found what is essentially a Southern rock bar band led by a good singer/songwriter/guitarist, Cody Canada, who probably has at least as many Bruce Springsteen records in his collection as those of the Marshall Tucker Band and Waylon Jennings. Road veterans, the musicians have a tight ensemble sound that showcases Canada's twangy lead guitar playing, his light baritone (which is often reminiscent of Earle's, though not quite as nasal and accented), and his thoughtful songwriting. Unsurprisingly, as a lyricist, Canada is concerned with that constant young man's struggle, breaking free of society's constraints, but he has a good eye for detail and an ear for a telling phrase: "You're always 17 in your hometown," if a bit overused in leadoff single "17," is an excellent way of putting the challenge of small-town living. Still, what impresses most is the overall sound of a band who has forged a distinctive style within a conventional genre through years of playing. This certainly doesn't sound like anybody's first album. ~ William Ruhlmann

Cross Canadian Ragweed Songs Cross Canadian Ragweed Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Buy It Whether you're a rocker, a southern rocker, a country music fan, or simply a fan of solid lyrics and jammin' music, this album will light your fires. I'd never heard of CCR until recently, when I caught a song on the net. I bought this CD based solely on that one song, and have now bought 3 of their kick-ass CDs. Start with this one, then pick up 'Soul Gravy.' You'll not be disapointed. Submitted by wardym12 (Youngstown, Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The Finest in Red Dirt Music Stillwater, Oklahoma, is fast becoming a haven for the best in roots-rock, alt-country music. Known as "red dirt music", it defies description. Part rock, part country, part folk but mostly red dirt is an attitude. Inspiration comes from folks ranging from Woody Guthrie to The Beatles to Merle Haggard and everyone in between. CCR is among the most visible of the current red dirt scene, although Jimmy LaFave, Jason Boland & the Stragglers, The Red Dirt Rangers, Bob Childers, and a plethora of others boast a legion of rabid fans. This is CCR's major label debut and it ranges from country-type ballads to loud and proud southern rock. Not a bad track on the disc. You'll be singing along with the second spin I guarantee! Cross Canadian Ragweed songs
$6.59 Cross Canadian Ragweed includes: Cody Canada (vocals, guitar); Grady Cross (guitar); Jeremy Plato (bass, background vocals); Randy Ragsdale (drums, percussion).
In 2004, sound-alike drones in pre-ordained "commercial" genres such as nu metal, teenpop, and gangsta rap seemed to be the only acts to break through to the mainstream. So it was a breath of fresh air to see an old-fashioned roots-rock band that was several albums into a grassroots career finally hit it big. Oklahoma quartet Cross Canadian Ragweed already had a few indie albums and one for Universal South to their credit before SOUL GRAVY hit the charts. Their raw, unpretentious sound is that of musicians who grew up playing together and built an audience through lots of dues-paying.
Unlike the wan, affected, Gram Parsons acolytes that dominate the alt-country market, CCR (the acronym is not unwarranted) are first and foremost a rock & roll band. There's plenty of twang and two-step under the surface, but SOUL GRAVY offers the kind of good-time, bar-band rave-ups that bands like the Georgia Satellites and Bottle Rockets previously unleashed. Tellingly, the hidden track at the disc's end is a furious, unironic cover of Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold."

| | Cross Canadian Ragweed Mission California CD (2007)
Cross Canadian Ragweed album
$11.49 On 2007's MISSION CALIFORNIA, the Oklahoma-based roots-rock act Cross Canadian Ragweed offers up another top-notch country-tinged set. Fronted by singer/guitarist Cody Canada, the quartet excels at good-natured, if slightly mischievous, rock (see the rebellious "Record Exec"), tempering its edge on some tunes with the background vocals of Lee Ann Womack, most notably the stomping single "I Believe You."

| | Count Basie Atomic Swing CD (1999)
Cross Canadian Ragweed CD music
$9.39 Released in 1999 to cash in on the resurgence of interest in swing music among post-baby boomers, Atomic Swing manages to transcend its immediate commercial purpose. It is the first 20-bit remastering of the Roulette library, and the sound quality alone makes it worth picking up. The 13 tracks present were cut by Basie over a six-year period with Morris Levy's Roulette Records, and they're a strong mix despite only three of the numbers coming off of the legendary Atomic Mr. Basie album. Most of the rest is from afterwards -- amazingly, only two of the numbers here -- "The Late, Late Show" and "Taps Miller" -- overlap with Capitol's existing Best of the Roulette Years, so duplication is a minimum, and the sound is amazingly good. The brass on "Moten Swing" and the broader numbers has equally impressive measures of richness and presence, while softer, moodier pieces like "The Midnight Sun Never Sets" display surprising warmth (but Eddie Jones' bass and Freddie Green's guitar also seem very close). There are no notes, but that's not a problem -- the session listing says most of what needs saying. ~ Bruce Eder
