Country singer-songwriter Rebecca Lynn Howard is not only an accomplished vocalist, she's a star-quality songsmith as well. Some of her own compositions have found homes with the likes of Trisha Yearwood, John Michael Montgomery, and others. But even if her pen only got a workout when she signed her checks, her voice would be enough to carry her career. Something of a prodigy, Howard was already recording when she was in her teens (the release of FORGIVE found her merely a tender 23 years old). This may account for the maturity in her delivery; a strong, assured style that carries her admirably through both her own songs and those of others. And though much of FORGIVE bears a contemporary pop-oriented tinge, Howard's still not above the occasional trad moment, as on the Dennis Linde-penned gem "Jesus and Bartenders."

Forgive
$6.69 If you think that photogenic young country singer Joe Nichols looks more like a Calvin Klein model than a honky-tonk warrior, just count your blessings that he doesn't feel bound to don an ill-fitting cowboy hat in the vain quest for the kind of phony image purveyed by far too many of his peers. Similarly, MAN WITH A MEMORY finds Nichols unafraid of sounding contemporary without completely abandoning his country roots. There's no hokey, half-assed western swing number tossed ...

RISE AND SHINE won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country, Or Bluegrass Gospel Album. "Three Wooden Crosses" was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
When Randy Travis first emerged on the country scene in the '80s he was hailed as a "new traditionalist" whose obvious reverence for the sound of classic country artists like George Jones was a breath of fresh air amid the diluted country-pop sounds that had become so prevalent. It's an interesting ...
| | Vince Gill Next Big Thing CD (2003)
Forgive
$12.59 "Next Big Thing" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
This album's title is an ironic one, since Vince Gill has spent plenty of time as the Big Thing in country music. He started out as a hot-pickin' bluegrass guitarist before going solo in the mid-'80s. Some 20 years down the line, Gill has nothing to prove but still plenty to say. As always, his sound is a mix of Rodney Crowell-style '80s New Traditionalism, white soul, and pop, with a touch of that bluegrass influence coming ...

| | Shelby Lynne Restless CD (1995)
Forgive
$11.65 The Curb reissue of Shelby Lynne's 1995 album, Restless, is a compelling one. While Lynne has undergone almost continual -- and mostly positive -- reinvention since she resurfaced with I Am Shelby Lynne in 2000, it's interesting to hear her on this Brent Maher-produced slab of swinging-for-the-charts commercial country. Of course, her voice is a trademark; whether she's singing the new traditionalist honky tonk of Maher's own "Another Chance at Love," Jamie O'Hara's weeper "Talkin' to Myself Again," or the jazzy country-pop that is Rod McGaha's "I Wish I Knew," the commitment to excellence is total. But these tracks, fine as they are, offer no revelation of Lynne's true "restlessness," which resides in her own R&B-tinged ...
