On THE DIARY, rapper Scarface creates a powerful, almost operatic progression of characters, portraying the different roles as they derive from the rapper's own persona. So he speaks either as Scarface or as Brad Jordan (his real name), as the cold-blooded gangsta or as a shrewd, compassionate observer of the mean streets of warring colors, doomed youth and innocents caught in the crossfire.
THE DIARY is a graphic, powerful, unwavering look at the day to day violence that has become brutally commonplace for far too many urban citizens, as underscored by the romantic strings, martial rhythm parts and automatic gunfire of "Intro," and the funky kill-or-be-killed braggadocio of "The White Sheet," a gangsta anthem with a series of menacing, deadly hooks.
Scarface anticipates all the usual criticism such a hard-edged approach would engender. He responds to such acrimony with indignation of his own on "Hand Of The Dead Body" (with Ice Cube). But a more telling response comes on "Mind Playin' Tricks," where Scarface delineates his own simple aspirations for family and self, and on the poignant, chilling "I Seen A Man Die," where he underscores a litany of tragedy and death by observing that "I never seen a man cry until I seen a man die...If you ain't at peace with God you need to patch it up...Here lies a man who ain't scared to die, may he rest in peace..."Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.178) - "...Scarface kicks unrepentantly...and still effectively....[These songs] are notes from the underground that ring terrifyingly and all too true..." Q (7/01, p.91) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time". Q (3/95, p.103) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...full of funky bass, whining synthesizers, and dramatic strings, the lyrics choked with bitter pathos, it roars away like an epic tragedy." Vibe (12/94-1/95, p.144) - "...THE DIARY is the sonic equivalent of a fists-in-the-air, blood-on-the-wall, helicopter-detonating, action-adventure flick. And he's the anti-hero..." The Source (1/95, p.88) - 4 Stars - Slammin' - "...Scarface is business as usual lyrically...this Geto boy has tapped into something new and has laid the foundation for an even brighter future..." NME (Magazine) (12/3/94, p.41) - 8 - Excellent - "...a high-minded, haunting attempt to find some sense to the debris of the projects....an album that deserves to be heard; a sustained argument against the supposed irresponsibility of gangsta..." Diary album
$11.69 Scarface once again quickly follows a Geto Boys album, Till Death Do Us Part, with a solo release, The World Is Yours, just as he'd done two years earlier with his brilliant solo debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back. The circumstances are otherwise quite different, though. Scarface had been on a roll in 1991: fresh off the breakthrough success of "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" and its similarly well-received Geto Boys album, We Can't Be Stopped, he unveiled a cinematic, somewhat conceptual solo debut that made him a bona fide national superstar. Furthermore, much changed within the rap world between 1991-1993, specifically the end of free-for-all sampling and the widespread proliferation of gangsta rap. Scarface thus delivers a follow-up that's a huge leap forward from his debut, both in terms of production and rhetoric. He works here mostly with producer N.O. Joe, who crafts a G-funk style distinctly modeled ...

$10.49 On THE FIX, Scarface works overtime to show that a rapper can retain his gangsta credibility and still explore other avenues of expression. He lays down hard-hitting thug-life scenarios on such tracks as "Safe" and "Keep Me Down," but THE FIX is far from monochromatic. The bevy of producers add something special to each track, from the aforementioned "Keep Me Down"'s clever utilization of an acoustic guitar riff sampled from '60s folkie Tom Rush, to golden-touch crew the Neptunes adding some pop/R&B flavoring (not to mention the sensual vocals of Faith Evans) to the catchy "Someday." Thematically, "Guess Who's Back" finds Scarface singing the praises of old-school camaraderie with Beanie Siegel and Jay-Z, while the complex sociological analysis of "What Can I Do?" favorably recalls the Furious Five's classic "The Message."

Diary album
$9.09 The 1970s were a funkier place thanks to the Delfonics, who produced some of the era's biggest floor-fillers. This collection offers some of their most memorable songs, including "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" and many others.
Demolition, Girlschool's 1980 Bronze Records debut, as well as Hit & Run, its 1981 Stiff follow-up, were reissued as one in May 2004 via the import-only Japanese Victor Co.. ~ Johnny Loftus
While Philadephia's Delfonics have had their share of collections and best-ofs, all of them have been left wanting for the exclusion of a key B-side, a necessary if little known album track, or even an excluded A-side that helped write their story. This Belgian collection of 20 tracks from virtually every period of the band's successful years mends that hole in the fence. Budget priced -- perhaps because of the lack of detailed discographical information (there are no chart placements, session details, or even source tags) -- it nonetheless collects virtually every single important track by the trio of William Hart, Wilbert Hart, and Randy Cain. And it does so, as the label name suggests, in audiophile sound on a gold disc no less! It also documents, however unintentionally, the ever-changing thoughts and refined production nuances of producer Thom Bell, whose Philly Groove label issued these sides originally. Along with the obvious selections such as "La-La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," there are stunning hidden nuggets such as "Think It Over" and "Walk Right Up to the Sun." With the inclusion of "Lying to Myself" and "When You Get Right Down to It," what began as a collection of hits becomes an indispensable collection of seminal soul sides from an amazing band that embodies the silky smooth immediacy of the very roots of the Philly sound (and paved the way for MFSB, among others) and provides ...

This two-disc reissue combines sessions Hank Jones waxed for Concord Jazz 12 years apart. The first CD contains 1977's Rockin' in Rhythm, originally co-billed to Jones, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jimmie Smith. The trio ably handles a group of standards, though, as annotator ...

$13.79 This is hardly tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart's first recording as a leader, but his earlier CDs were for various European labels. In the Still of the Night is the release that set his career afire, as he joins forces with three of New York's in-demand musicians in his rhythm section: the hard-driving pianist Tardo Hammer, everyone's first call bassist Peter Washington and the talented drummer Joe Farnsworth. Right of the box, the big-toned Stewart makes his presence known ...
