Here to lay his playa game down on the world of hip hop, Devin, who hails from the west (Houston, Texas to be exact), sets it off with THE DUDE. And anyone who is a fan of that good old fashion southernplayilistic sound will be wise to pick it up. This album, which contains seventeen tracks, benefits extensively from some intoxicating laid-back beats and high profile guest appearances by veterans Scarface and Spice 1.

| | Devin Just Tryin' Ta Live CD (2002)
Dude CD music
$16.05 On JUST TRYIN' TA LIVE, Devin the Dude presents himself as a streetwise hip-hop artist who's got enough pop smarts to make his music accessible to the general public, but enough credibility to keep things on the real side. Though JUST TRYIN' TA LIVE is laced with infectious production touches, crips, hard-hitting beats, and visceral synth hooks, the main attraction, quite rightly, is Devin's rhyming skills. Without belaboring his points, he manages to get them across with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of skill.

| | Z-Ro Life Of Joseph W. Mcvey CD (2004)
Dude music CDs
$14.29 A veteran of 10 albums at the age of 26 and an acclaimed member of Houston's Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro is much more complex than his surface or the simple intro of THE LIFE OF JOSEPH W. MCVEY may imply. Prolific output isn't the only thing he has in common with hardcore legends such as Too Short and Rap-A-Lot icon Scarface; Z-Ro also cuts his hard-edged street delivery with a haunting, almost hypnotic, introspection.
As this album reveals, Z-Ro deeply feels every word he sings. With "I Hate U B***h," the song is not so much a misogynistic rant as the pained, primal gut-reaction of a devoted man who's been hurt by the object of his affection (the line after the title is "I never thought I would say [it]"). On the melodic "Why?," he ponders the insanity of the thug life, wishing he could be loving and simple, spiritual and comfortable, but uncertain of how to find his escape. THE LIFE OF JOSEPH MCVEY reveals a tortured soul who concurrently knows himself and doesn't understand a thing, making this an achingly honest record that deserves to break Z-Ro through to new audiences.

| | Devin The Dude To Tha X-Treme CD (2004)
Dude album
$14.29 Making good on the "dude" part of his name, the good-natured rapper Devin the Dude eases through a fun and relaxed set of songs on TO THA X-TREME. A laid-back vibe (at least partially due to some serious smoke inhalation) pervades the album, making it a welcome change of pace from more gruff, heavier hip-hop. Devin hilariously introduces the disc on "Devin's Medley," and then slides into the smooth, electronic-tinged title track. Other highlights include the dreamy "Right Now," which boasts a gentle acoustic guitar line and light percussion, and the entertaining stoner-meets-cop tale of "Go Fight Some Other Crime." By mixing deft pop melodies with tight rap beats and clever rhymes, Devin has crafted one of 2004's most enjoyable hip-hop records.

| | Devin The Dude Waitin' To Inhale CD (2007)
Dude CD music
$15.05 Florida-born but repping H-Town, Devin the Dude has garnered accolades and admiration from diverse corners of the hip-hop world--from Dr. Dre to Scarface to DJ Hi-Tek--for his unique brand of smoothed-out Dirty South funk. On his fourth solo long-player, WAITIN' TO INHALE, Devin continues to do his thing, with that same molasses-thick production full of tight piano and synthesizer-heavy samples, as well as his trademark comically perverse lyrics. The subject matter hasn't changed at all as the Dude once again produces a potent sex-obsessed, smoke-filled, liquor-drenched masterpiece. Snoop, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, Bun B, and Devin's crew the Odd Squad make guest appearances.
Personnel: Devin the Dude (rap vocals).
Additional personnel: 14K, Lil Wayne, André 3000, Odd Squad, Snoop Dogg, Bun B.
| | Valerie Capers Wagner Takes The "A" Train CD (1999) (Import)
Dude music CDs
$16.09 In the tradition of Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, Jeri Southern, and Blossom Dearie, among others, Capers sings as well as plays piano. Her deep, heavy voice has a maternal tone about it, making the listener feel very comfortable and at ease with her renditions of "Nature Boy" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me." "Nature Boy" is sung in both French and English to a Latin beat! Capers delivers her own poignant ballad "Always You" with sensitivity and feeling. Givens' tenor is also prominent on this piece. "My One and Only Love" is perfect for Capers' understated, sensitive vocal style. Her voice, with just Mark Martino's guitar behind her, reinvigorates the Guy Wood/Robert Mellin. Another feature which places this album above the ordinary is the outstanding sidemen and the support they give Capers. Sax player Givens has already been mentioned, as has "Martino." John Robinson, who appeared with Capers on her 1995 release Come on Home, has "Mood Indigo" virtually all to himself with some help from Earl Williams' drums. His six-minute plus bass solo is a tour de force. In addition to their blue ribbon soloing, when Capers is "on" the sidemen are supportive, not intrusive. This is a very unique, entertaining album with very good music played by accomplished musicians. ~ Dave Nathan
Valerie Capers was a classical pianist before she came to jazz music. But the classical background with its very structured, "non-improvising" setting, has limited neither Capers' credentials nor her skills as a jazz pianist. At the same time, she is not at all reluctant to take advantage of her classical training to enhance her interpretation of jazz music. Thus, Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" is played as a variation on a theme -- in bop, swing, classical sonata, and Latin modes. "Wagner Takes the 'A' Train" is a highlight of the album. The liner notes would have you believe that there is some relationship between Capers' interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's song to the 29 motifs of Wagner's "Ring Cycle." But it comes off far less sophisticated and complicated than that. Rather, this is a hard-driving, swinging set with Al Givens' Ben Webster-like sax leading the way with Capers. This is the Ben Webster from the 1940s Ellington Orchestra, not the breathy Webster of later years. Capers gives Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'" a rousing rendering with a touch of blues. Of all the cuts, her own "Organum" is done classical style, complete with some very heavy cello-like bass bowing from John Robinson and more than a few runs and arpeggios from Capers.
Personnel includes: Valerie Capers (piano); Alan Givens (saxophone, flute).
