Includes liner notes by John Stetch. Audio Mixer: Steve Bellamy. Liner Note Author: John Stetch. Recording information: Threefold Auditorium, Chestnut Ridge, NY (12/29/2001-12/30/2001). Editor: Steve Bellamy. Photographers: Jimmy Katz; John Stetch. Arranger: John Stetch. John Stetch is a Canadian pianist of Ukrainian descent, and with this fine solo disc he consciously sets out to explore his heritage. Based largely on folkloric sources, the music is by turns contemplative and playful, with Stetch referencing jazz and classical harmonies and ethnic dance rhythms to create a program full of contrasts. Stetch is also quite the texturalist, pounding the piano's low end for dramatic effect and delving inside the instrument for buzzing drones and atmospheric clatter. The swing flavor of "Carpathian Blues" and the strikingly beautiful melodic contours of "Savella" and "Children of Chornobyl" (sic) are among the key highlights. ~ David R. Ukrainianism
$12.49 Solo performer: Jason Moran (piano, mini piano). Recorded at Systems Two, New York, New York on April 12, 2002. Includes liner notes by Alicia Hall. Jason Moran's fourth Blue Note album, a highly idiosyncratic solo piano venture, attempts to reconcile a staggeringly diverse set of influences into a cohesive artistic vision. Beginning with stride master James P. Johnson's "You've Got to Be Modernistic," the omnivorous young pianist then takes that title to heart by personalizing everything from Robert Schumann's "Auf Einer Burg" to Muhal Richard Abrams' "Time Into Space Into Time" to Afrika Bambaataa's ...

Unknown Contributor Role: Trim Ken Slim. Arranger: Digable Planets. Media darlings after the commercial success of their debut, Digable Planets attempted to prove their artistic merit with this second album, and succeeded wildly. A worthy, underrated successor, Blowout Comb was just as catchy and memorable as their first, and also offered the perfect response to critics and hip-hop fans who complained they weren't "real" enough. Except for a dark, indecipherable single named "Dial 7 (Axioms of Creamy Spies)," Blowout Comb excelled at pushing great grooves over sunny-day party jams, even when the crew was providing deft social commentary -- as on "Black Ego" and "Dial 7 (Axioms of Creamy Spies)." The trio used their greater clout to invite instrumentalists instead of relying completely on samples, and the music took on more aspects of the live jam than before. Though Blowout Comb still borrowed a host of riffs from ...
| | Thelonious Monk Quartet featuring John Coltrane Live At The Five Spot--Discovery! CD (1993)
Ukrainianism
$9.45 Full performer name: The Thelonious Monk Quartet featuring John Coltrane. Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded live at the Five Spot, New York in the summer of 1957. Includes liner notes by Lewis Porter. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Thelonious Monk (piano); Roy Haynes (drums). Liner Note Author: Lewis Porter. Recording information: Five Spot, New York, NY (1957). Illustrator: Harry Roolaart. The urban mythology surrounding this non-professional recording -- suggesting that Naima Coltrane (aka Mrs. John Coltrane) was running tape during this particular set -- is fortunately true. Fortunate, that is, for lovers of bop or anyone who ever wished in vain that they could be transported to a legendary night such as the one captured during this short disc. The raw nature of this audience tape more accurately reveals the reality of experiencing a performance during the Five Spot's halcyon days. What can also be found beyond the sporadic chatter and general hubbub of a New York City Harlem nightclub is arguably the strongest aural evidence of the unique working rapport these two jazz icons shared. While the relationship between Monk and Coltrane is at the crux of these performances, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and the irrepressible drummer Roy Haynes also contribute ...
