An exquisite guitarist of great sensitivity and warmth, Cam Newton has contributed much to the guitar repertoire, and IPSO FACTO is no exception. Also featuring bassist Mark Schneider and percussionist Tarik Banzi, this album fuses together many disparate musical styles, from American pop to Brazilian bossa nova to gypsy jazz.
The opening track, "Morning of the Gypsy King (For Django)" is dedicated to the legendary six-stringer Django Reinhardt. A carefree waltz, the song captures the wanderlust of Reinhardt's youth. "Hammock (For Jobim)" follows on its heels, with a tribute to the Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. On this piece, the sliding fretless bass and jazzy finger-picked chords complement the Latin inflected melody. Moving in a completely different direction, "Casting for the Big One" combines the winsome style of Randy Newman with a soft brush beat, twangy dobro licks, and bluesy guitar riffs. The final selection is "The Splendid Amplitude of It All," and this flamenco-influenced track again highlights Newton's diverse interests and technical abilities.

$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his ...

With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings ...

Ipso Facto songs
$13.25 Recorded live at one of the Los Angeles Jazz Institute's legendary four-day jazz convention/festivals, Taking the Long Way Home features altoist Bud Shank joined by a specially assembled big band. The arrangements are mostly by Mike Barone, Bob Cooper, Manny Albam, and Bob Florence with Shank being the main soloist throughout. Tenor saxophonist Doug Webb is prominent interacting with Shank on "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," trumpeter Carl Saunders has a heated spot on "Limes Away," and Florence plays piano on his lengthy "Taking the Long Way Home." Shank's warm alto solos, his verbal introductions of each selection, and the tightness and spirit of the band (despite only having one or two rehearsals) make this a real keeper. ~ Scott Yanow
