| | David Allan Coe 20 All-Time Greatest Hits CD David Allan Coe Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
As dodgy collections go, this one isn't all bad. It does have some dynamite David Allan Coe performances on it: There' "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile," "You Never Even Called Me by My Name," "Tennessee Whiskey," "Willie, Waylon and Me," and "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)," but it lacks such essentials as "Long-Haired Redneck," "Take This Job and Shove It," and "A Sad Country Song." There are far better best-of's, but there are worse ones, too. What makes this worth the few dollars is that there are no bad cuts on this set, making it a decent Coe listening experience. ~ Thom Jurek

| | David Allan Coe Live At Billy Bob's Texas CD (2003)
20 All-Time Greatest Hits
$13.35 Say whatever the hell you want about David Allan Coe, but he's one of a kind as a singer, songwriter, and performer. In his early sixties, Coe hasn't slowed a bit and is experiencing another of his periodic renaissances as an artist and live act. Live at Billy Bob's Texas is R-rated Coe -- unlike the "Mature Audiences Only" tag on Live at the Iron Horse -- and the performance is tight, full-on badass country-rock with a band that rivals any but the Allman Brothers (including his pal Kid Rock's). Who knows how long this show really was, as most of the audience monologues have been omitted, but who gives a damn when it's as fine as this? ...

| | David Allan Coe Essentia CD (2004) Remastered
20 All-Time Greatest Hits
$6.75 THE ESSENTIAL DAVID ALLAN COE provides an excellent thumbnail sketch of Coe's career, hitting all the highlights. Coe's gift for self-mythologizing (an important skill in country music) is exemplified by his outlaw manifesto "Willie, Waylon and Me." "Take This Job and Shove It" was penned by Coe, but is best known as a huge hit for Johnny Paycheck, and it's great to hear it interpreted by its author. "If That Ain't Country" is emblematic of Coe's irresistible, in-your-face approach, and his ballad "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)," a hit for ...
| | Michael Hurley Have Moicy! CD (1976)
20 All-Time Greatest Hits
$12.29 Recorded on July 14-15, 1975. Includes original release and reissue liner notes by Peter Stampfel.
Three days in the studio in 1975 resulted in this staggeringly good 1976 release. The recording brought together an overlapping array of players, who'd had, variously, histories of performing together or playing each other's songs. Michael Hurley brought along his "Sweet Lucy, "Fooey Fooey," "Driving Wheel" and the immortal "Slurf Song." Peter Stampfel, founder ...

| | Paul Brandt This Time Around CD (2004) (Import) Canada
20 All-Time Greatest Hits
$14.25 A country star who hails from Canada, Paul Brandt presents some affecting material on this 2004 album.
Paul Brandt left Reprise after his 1999 album That's the Truth, and he spent the next five years in the wilderness. He signed with BMG Canada and released two albums -- 2000's What I Want to Be Remembered For and 2001's live Small Towns and Big Dreams -- before he managed to get another contract in the States. He finally resurfaced on Orange, a subsidiary of Universal, in the fall of 2004, and with the new label came an opportunity to redefine himself and reinvigorate his career, and he seized it, writing or co-writing every song on the album apart from the opening cover of "Convoy," which all too faithfully mimics C.W. McCall's original. While it's entertaining, it starts the album on an awkward foot, but things straighten out quickly with "Leavin'," an arena rock-influenced ballad whose echoed guitars echo U2 quite heavily. This is a brooding, intense number that finds Brandt stretching himself and succeeding, and while more of the album could have ...
