"ICEHOUSE", "SIDEWALK", "WARNER BROTHERS", "CD", "ROCK" This remastered edition includes four bonus tracks from the Iva Davies-led Austrailian experimental rock band.
Sidewalk is Icehouse's least-effective album, mainly because of a stagnant array of narrowly synthesized pop songs which lack the warmth, melody, or perkiness that can be found in later efforts. The hooks are few and far between, and while their sultry keyboard recipe falls into the same category as that of the Human League, Ultravox, or Visage, Sidewalk fails to exemplify the same synth pop froth or colorfulness that these bands utilized in gaining chart success. Without the techno-pop radiance or keyboard-laden bite found on their next two albums -- 1986's Measure for Measure and 1987's Man of Colours -- Sidewalk is towed along somewhat lethargically by dimly lit lyrics and tiresome instrumental digressions. Even the earlier albums had Iva Davies sounding a little more enthused, especially 1982's Primitive Man. Sidewalk can easily be left behind without its greatest asset, "Taking the Town" even being missed. ~ Mike DeGagne

| | Icehouse Measure For Measure CD (1986) Remastered
Sidewalk CD music
$14.35 '80s pop faves Icehouse reissue their album MEASURE FOR MEASURE.
Based on the principles of balance, Measure for Measure is half-produced by David Lord, half by Rhett Davies. American and European editions benefit from a better track list, which opens with the Davies-produced "No Promises." A little too close to Bowie and Metheny's "This Is Not America," perhaps, but very nice all the same. "Cross the Border" resembles and continues the close relationship with Simple Minds, and ...

| | Icehouse Primitive Man CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Sidewalk songs
$14.35 Long before they had pop hits in the late-1980s, Aussie Iva Davies and his outfit Icehouse started off as a moody rock band influenced by the glam of the 1970s. 1982's PRIMITIVE MAN, the act's second release painted an aural landscape of artful music.
As an oboe/guitar player involved in electro popular music, it's no surprise Iva Davies took to Roxy Music, especially on "Street Café" and the mega-hit "Hey Little Girl," which duly landed in no less than 13 European Top Ten singles charts, going all the way in Switzerland. An album of atmospheres, "Great Southern Land" evokes images of Australia's arid interior, while "Trojan Blue" conjures up medieval Italy or France. "Mysterious Thing" continues Primitive Man's mood, and produces what may be the best line in ambient ...
| | Icehouse Man Of Colours CD (1987) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Australia
Sidewalk album
$15.95 This album by the Australian New Wave band Icehouse includes "Crazy," "Electric Blue," and "My Obsession."
On their fifth album, the smooth pop style of Australia's Icehouse is garnished with even more bouncy synthesizers and lavish melodies than their earlier work. Lead singer Iva Davies elaborated slant is immediately forthcoming in all the tunes on this album, but is truly the best working part behind the group. Man of Colours' first two tracks attached themselves to the Top 40, with "Crazy" peaking at number 17 in 1987 and "Electric Blue" reaching number seven in 1988, a song co-written by John Oates. After these two singles, the rest of the album becomes thin with keyboard -- crammed, syncopated rhythms jumping behind electric guitar that can barely be noticed. Even though the emphasis on keyboards is stereotypical of '80s pop, it's only after the third or fourth ...
| | Minutemen Post-Mersh, Volume 2: Buzz Or Howl Under Influence Of Heat/Project Mersh CD (1987)
Sidewalk CD music
$14.89 Originally issued as 2 separate releases: the BUZZ OR HOWL UNDER INFLUENCE OF HEAT EP and the PROJECT MERSH LP.
The Minutemen came a long way in their all-too-brief career. Initially a hardcore punk outfit, they soon began to carve out a signature sound that incorporated funk rhythms and political lyrics. Their stock in trade was the extremely concise song. On the first few releases, they stayed ...

| | Patrick Porter Lisha Kill CD (2005)
Sidewalk album
$13.85 Patrick Porter's Lisha Kill falls very much under the spell of Pink Floyd in both their Syd Barrett and post-Barrett days. It's not so much a case of explicit imitation (though there certainly are moments that bring vintage Floyd to mind) as it is a similarity of mood, both in the placid, pastoral folky ...
| | Logan Leet More Things Change CD (2001)
Sidewalk CD music
$10.09 It may be explained by his growing up playing in a symphony orchestra while also fronting a rock band, but Logan Leet's musical background can best be described as, well...diverse. Logan's formal training was on the clarinet and oboe, but he couldn't seem to stay away from the diversions of guitar and piano and by the time he was out of college, the woodwinds had been placed aside and Logan began his journey towards life as a singer/songwriter. Somehow, over the years, this evolved into Logan's own brand of eclectic folk/rock.Whether performing with his band, The Lie, or as a solo acoustic act, he will take you from the horse and tobacco fields of his native Kentucky Bluegrass region to dropping out in Jamaica to Appalachia for a true story of life in the hills, and along the way tell ...
| | Chris Letcher Frieze CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Sidewalk music CDs
$15.65 On "Deep Frieze," Frieze's opening track, Chris Letcher evokes Baltic sea wolves, Jason and the Argonauts, an emperor and a god, a mullet fin dish, and a parachute escape, a rather elaborate lyrical ruse to invoke a cascade of shifting emotions. Or at least that seems to be his theme. Letcher, the singer/songwriter and his eponymous band, have created an album underpinned by poetry and swaddled in atmospheric music. The latter, while oft times haunting and emotive, is merely a backdrop for Letcher's wonderful wordcraft. The South African may have flown the coop from one of his homeland's most popular rock bands, but he's since matured into one of the most sophisticated, intelligent writers around. In fact, even "singer/songwriter" doesn't do justice to his full-blown verse, with ...
| | Lightnin Hopkins Lightnin' Hopkins Vol. 2 CDs (2007) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Sidewalk songs
$28.59 Most JSP box sets are comprehensive chronological core samples taken from the recording careers of great jazz, blues and country musicians. Some may find JSP's Lightning Special, Vol. 2, subtitled "Volume Two of the Collected Works," to be uncharacteristically difficult to navigate. Chronologically scrambled, this four-CD set also contains so many recordings by other musicians that Hopkins gets pushed aside, as it were, half way through his own retrospective. Yes, this is a wonderful grab bag of Texas blues recordings cut during the eventful years between 1946 and 1956, but Hopkins only appears on 62 out of 106 tracks. Yes, it is exciting to hear so many vintage postwar blues performances by the friends and contemporaries of Hopkins, including Manny Nichols, Lil' Son Jackson, J.D. Edwards, Soldier Boy Houston, Ernest Lewis and Frankie Lee Sims, but with so many guests on board the collection really should have been titled "Lightnin' Slim and His Buddies." The jumbled chronology seems most alarming as Hopkins' very first recordings -- waxed in Los Angeles on November 9, 1946 with pianist Thunder Smith -- show up halfway through Disc C in this second volume of Lightning Special! The inclusion of three rare sides by Thunder Smith without Hopkins is highly commendable, and the music throughout ...
