(5 Customer Reviews)
Mr. Lif, the hardworking Bostonian MC, drops a debut LP that playfully discloses in lyrical fashion his inner battle of whether or not to return to his nine-to-five job, but the long-overdue record practically guarantees he'll no longer need the day job. One of the working-class heroes signed to hip-hop indie Definitive Jux, Liffy enjoyed a busy 2002, releasing the Emergency Rations EP and appearing on several releases from the Jux camp. I Phantom is slightly less politically aggressive than the EP in overall aesthetic, with blue-collar rhymes over hype, funky tracks with great production by Fakts One, DJ Hype, Edan, and Lif himself. The guest appearances on the mic by Akrobatik, a fellow fledgling Bostonion, Edan, Aesop Rock, El-P, and Jean Grae make all the tracks quality and seal the deal on Lif's breakthrough set. ~ Nic Kincaid

A Legend In The Making Man, Culture in Queens is right. Nuff respect my brotha. I saw Lif live at my College one time and met him. Though he was stressed, he ain't hurtin' nobody. Def Jux Camp are on the verge of being sell outs of underground sound. Def Jux just got wack over years. Company Flow was dope when Funcrusher came out on Rawkus. Now it seems that El-P is tryin' too hard. He mumbles too much, even though his production is tight. Mr. Lif however was the reason why funcrusher was a success and he proves why on this LP. The first album Although it might take some time to get used to Mr Lif's voice, he's one hell of a clever mc. I, Phantom is his first real album and production is from El-P, Insight and more. The entire idea behind this album is one story, it starts with a dream and ends up with the world getting destroyed. He put down the concept very well and got help from Jean Grae, El-P, Insight, Akrobatik and Aesop Rock to do so.
Most of the time the beats work, sometimes they sound kinda odd or cheap and don't really work. There are enough dope songs to make this album worth buying, for example "Return of the B-Boy", "New Man Theme" and "Earthcrusher" are great. I'm not a big Def Jux fan, but "I, Phantom" is often in rotation in my cd player. Submitted by HCS (Holland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mr. Lif is DOPE, BUT Definitve Jux = SUCKS...
Why is a dope emcee like Mr. Lif down with flunkies like EL-P and Definitive Jux? It's like trying to train a Jamacian Bobsled team to win a winter olympic gold medal. They just don't 'mesh'. Seriously though, Mr. Lif needs to break away from this joke of a 'label', cause to be quite honest he don't need them. Submitted by Culture (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$17.69 Jim (Jimmy) Valentine â Leader/ClarinetJim, mostly self taught, has played professionally for the last 45 years, beginning with the âDixieLads Jazz Bandâ at the grand opening in 1963 of a place called âAcross The Streetâ in East Davenport, IA. He began sitting in with the DixieLads in the early â60âs learning the songs and the Dixieland style of clarinet playing. He also met his idol, Pete Fountain on a trip to New Orleans in 1963 and a long-standing friendship was established. He has worked hard to master Peteâs famous âfat soundâ and most will agree he has achieved his goal. After the DixieLads, Jim joined the newly formed âDavenport Jazz Bandâ with Bill Allred, Don OâDette, Joe DeWeese, Boyd Bergeson and Steve Russell playing to a packed house every weekend at the Davenport Holiday Inn including live WOC radio broadcasts on Saturday nights. In 1971, the infamous battle of the bands was held when the âBix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Bandâ from New Jersey came to town to play at Bixâs grave and the following year the Bix Festival was born. When the Davenport Jazz Band disbanded Jim joined the âRiverboaters Jazz Bandâ with Gus Tripolus, Bob Cook, Warren Parish and Daryl Kupy playing weekends for 22 years at Hunterâs Club in Rock Island, IL. An invitation by two former DixieLad members, Lou and Stan Black, led to Jim playing 10 âSacramento Jazz Jubileesâ with the âGrand Republic Jazz Bandâ. He has also played in at least 6 Bix Festivals. In 2004, he joined the âScott Silver Chicago Jazz ...
