| | Average White Band Soul Searching CD (1976)
Negropolitaines, Vol. 2 songs
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Meters CD (1969)
Negropolitaines, Vol. 2 album
$11.59 Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated ...

| | Hurt Process Drive By Monologue CD (2004)
Negropolitaines, Vol. 2 album
$10.39 On their first full-length release, the Hurt Process played a formulaic brand of rock common to the late '90s and early 2000s -- that is, a blend of punk, hardcore, metal, and pop; much alternation of all-out crunching passages with more subdued, contemplative ones; and vocals that ran the gamut from a throat-full-o'-razor-blades growl to high, yearning sweet harmonies. It might not be too distinctive, but it's tight and well done here, almost slickly so. "I'm just drowning in confused emotion, I don't know where to...stand and how to feel," they sing in "Clarity," and that's a sentiment that runs through much of the material: young guys in turbulence trying to connect in the face of a reality that's more difficult and complex than they're prepared for, though the tone isn't as despairing here as it is in many releases of this sort. A lot of it turns out to be about stormy personal relationships when you read the fine print, though their horizons aren't strictly limited to such subject matter, as ...

| | Brian Mcknight Ten CD (2006)
Negropolitaines, Vol. 2 songs
$15.65 Not only did contemporary R&B vocalist Brian McKnight move to Warner Brothers for 2006's TEN, but he collaborated with Tim & Bob, one of the highest profile studio teams in the R&B game, for several of the album's tracks. Among these are the standout cuts "Used to Be My Girl," a smooth, sensuous confession of lost love, and the equally smooth and heart-tugging "Unhappy Without You." Tim & Bob's particular spin on lush, vibey production is immediately noticeable, but it is McKnight's emotive vocal performances that really stand out.
The rest of the disc falls into step, offering its share of bedroom ballads and lithe, groove-propelled jams. McKnight weathered a divorce in the early 2000s, ...
