Lenny White's 1977 recording The Adventures of Astral Pirates was an incredibly tough act to follow -- so tough, in fact, that anything less than a five-star gem was likely to seem a bit disappointing. Streamline, the 1978 LP that came right after The Adventures of Astral Pirates, isn't a five-star gem, but it isn't bad either. Although not in a class with The Adventures of Astral Pirates or 1975's Venusian Summer, let alone White's work with Return to Forever, Streamline is a generally decent, if mildly uneven, collection of instrumental jazz fusion and R&B vocal numbers. While this album (which White produced with Earth, Wind & Fire keyboardist Larry Dunn) isn't as R&B-oriented as White's Twennynine projects would be, the drummer is obviously going after R&B audiences on "Time" (a somewhat Earth, Wind & Fire-ish funk item) and an interesting cover of the Beatles' "Lady Madonna" (which features soul goddess Chaka Khan). But there is also plenty of fusion, and instrumentals like "Night Games," "Struttin'," and the Brazilian-influenced "Pooh Bear" are enjoyable even though they fall short of the brilliance of the material on The Adventures of Astral Pirates and Venusian Summer. While Streamline isn't among White's essential albums, it's a likable set. ~ Alex Henderson

Streamline, a wonderful blend of fusion-jazz-funk Lenny White's Streamline is a classic. I've owned a vinyl copy for many years, but yearned for the CD -- now it's here. It's one of the strongest albums produced by a drummer. You can tell who the boss is as you hear the powerful and original drum riffs throughout the album. The songs are delightful! You won't regret adding this great album to your collection! Submitted by jeffadachi (SF, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
fusion drum great moves into funk territory Having already bought the other 3 Lenny White re-issues, I was prepared to listen to some more great fusion. I was quite surprised at this album though. Pleasantly. This album marked White's more full blown foray into funk. It was actually as good as much of the funk of the era, and is probably comparable in sound, to Earth Wind and Fire, although with a bit less emphasis on the vocals. There are still a little jazz/fusion edge to the material, but in general this album offers a very nice slab of well played funk. If you're a fan of Lenny White, jazz, fusion, and most especially well played 70's funk, you have to pick this album up. Submitted by a reviewer (Wallingford, CT,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Finally ! Lenny's best solo effort in every way. A great line-up of musicians including Nick Moroch and Jamie Glaser on guitars blaze. Lennys' drums sound great, Marcus cooks and it sounds like a BAND rather than a solo project with guests. Submitted by Johnny Rock (WISTA, MA,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Career Peak! I really believe that Lenny White's music truely achieved perfection with this album. He manages to blend funk, fusion and even some rock into a slick brew where the album's title is no misnomer.Crafted material is the order of the day with Chaka Khan and Don Blackman's vocals on "Lady Madonna",his voice alone on the funky "Time" and White's brilliant instrumental "Pooh Bear".And as for everything else-even the fusion pieces in between are tightly circumscribed and feature Lenny White being more or less himself. This will make a fine introduction to Lenny White's music for those who've never heard it and is VERY HIGHLY recommended!!! $9.69 Jazz/funk/fusion title by Lenny, originally released in 1978. 11 tracks. 2002.
One of Lenny White's finest, most essential albums, The Adventures of Astral Pirates is a jazz-fusion masterpiece with a futuristic science-fiction theme. Star Wars was number one at the box office when, in 1977, White produced this disc with Al Kooper, and perhaps Elektra was hoping to cash in on the film's popularity. If you open the record's foldout cover, you can ...
| | Flora Purim Carry On CD (1979)
Streamline
$9.69 In 1979, jazz was no longer George Duke's primary focus; his albums were emphasizing soul/funk, and many of the R&B fans who knew him for late '70s hits, like "Dukey Stick," "I Want You for Myself," and "Reach for It," knew little or nothing about his work with Cannonball Adderley, Billy Cobham, or Jean-Luc Ponty. But Duke was still producing some jazz albums here and there, although they weren't necessarily straight ahead. Even though Flora Purim's Carry On, which Duke produced, is primarily a Brazilian jazz album, it isn't for jazz purists -- rather, Purim provides an eclectic blend of jazz, samba, R&B/funk, rock and pop. Purim has many inspired moments on this LP and is joined by members of Duke's late '70s band -- bassist Byron Miller, drummers Ricky Lawson and Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, percussionist Sheila Escovedo (who became Sheila E after joining forces with Prince in 1984), keyboardist Bobby Lyle, trumpeter Jerry Hey, and saxman Joe Farrell. In addition to excelling on Duke's funky title song, Gilberto Gil's "Sarara," and Toninho Horta's "Beijo Partido," Purim really lets loose on Milton Nascimento's ...

$12.09 A BREATH OF FRESH AIR contains 2 LPs on 1 CD from 1968 and 1969 and features jazz standards and '60s show tunes.
The jazz content of this CD reissue is pretty light as singer Marlene Ver Planck (who as usual displays a beautiful voice with a wide range) is backed by rather commercial arrangements on a repertoire dominated by then-current show and movie tunes that often sound quite dated today. She certainly does her best (as can be heard on wordless versions of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Mission Impossible") but Ver Planck's later recordings are much more valuable from the jazz standpoint. ~ Scott Yanow
