A very humble beginning for this excellent progressive band. Only a couple years removed from high school, they were strictly a metal band at this point, and "Damnation" is the only song that has remained in their catalog from this session. Early recordings such as this one are the reason their name conjures up the image of a metal band. [The 2003 re-release contains a 1984 demo version of "Last Call," a live rendition of "Kiss of Death," and rehearsal recordings of "The Calling" and Iron Maiden's "Flight of Icarus."] ~ Robert Taylor

The bombastic pounding, dueling guitars, and falsetto singing defined this genre perfectly. Finally aided by label support and professional production, Queensryche set about to begin the storied progression of their sound. Once you get past the monotony of the title track, the journey begins. The haunting chimes of the explosive intro to "En Force" show that Seattle had a lot more to offer rock music than the impending grunge rock phenomenon. The somber, brooding outro to the song (showcasing vocalist Geoff Tate above all else) showed that while the band still relied heavily on guitar harmonies and double-bass drumming, they were now starting to incorporate more progressive and dramatic song structures. The pride of Littlefield, Texas, Waylon Jennings was a member of Buddy Holly and the Crickets during the fateful 1959 tour that ended with Holly's death in a plane crash. But by the early 1970s, the ferociously talented and mercurial singer-songwriter had completely erased his early status as a rock-&-roll footnote. Almost singlehandedly inventing the entire genre of outlaw country alongside his friend Willie Nelson, Jennings's '70s and '80s material sounds as fresh on THE ESSENTIAL WAYLON JENNINGS as it did at the time of its release.
