Although Fates Warning was beginning to create their own sound as a metal band, they were still not a progressive band at this point. The bombastic pounding, dueling guitars, and falsetto singing defined this genre perfectly. Metal fans may enjoy this more than Night on Brocken, especially "Pirates of the Underground" and "The Apparition," but there is very little, if anything, for the progressive fan. ~ Robert Taylor

| Spectre Within Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Best of the Heavy Bands This CD is better than most of the other Heavy Metal bands.Instead of just chugging out riffs that sound the same over and over, and screaming and growling.Fates Warning knows how to add melody and atmosphere to the songs. one of my personal favorites one of the few discs i have where having had hundreds of listens to it, i still love it. it's still fresh. it's still incredible. john arch is phenomenal with coming up with vocal melodies. and the music is great behind him.
one of my favorites of all time (if not my number one favorite). Submitted by rayaldernotreally (US, USA, USofA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
one of my favorites of all time john arch at his best. i wasn't entirely fond of night on brocken, and awake the guardian, i felt, lacked any memorable parts with a few exceptions. arch's vocals on here are flawless and the music is phenomenal.
i've listened to this album almost non-stop for a year and it never gets old. buy this, you won't be sorry. Submitted by gmilf (Johnsonville Bratland, OK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I remember now... What made me love this band.I got this re-release,hadn't heard it in years,on a whim...and spent the rest of the evening, glass of Jim Beam in hand,"Travelling in Time"back to 1985,and the impact this record had upon me.Like a sledgehammer borne on angel's wings, melodies that will haunt forever,a chilling atmosphere of cold autumn winds, falling leaves, and transgressions into the beyond..."The Apparition"and the epic "Epitaph" are simply two of the best metal pieces ever written.I've haven't heard an album that has transported me like this one since.Awesome. Spectre Within album
$12.69 Pam Purvis Pam is from Louisiana and Texas. She began singing jazz in 1974 in Paterson, NJ at Gulliver’s (now just a fond memory for those who were there). It was a good place to begin because she met and sang with Chuck Wayne, Joe Puma, Gabor Zabo, Joe Morello, Jack Six, and Bob Ackerman. The later of these fine musicians she decided to keep. They have been married and working together for 25 years, and have 8 recordings together to this date.During the last several years they have performed in Europe at the Stockholm Jazz Festival, San Remo Jazz Festival, Asti Jazz Festival as well as Mexico and all over the US. She sings currently with Joe Cohn, Richard Wyands, Dennis Irwin, Earl May, Chip Jackson, Steve Johns, and many other great musicians. She credits her style to “living with a horn player”. She likes to tell a story about meeting and hanging out with the great scat singer Joe Carroll. When she asked him how he learned to sing those improvised type lines he told her “Listen to the horn players, baby, listen to the horn players”.Her sense of lyrics she credits to the training she received at the American Academy of ...
| | Rembetika 2: More Of The Secret History Of Greece's Underground Music CDs (2008) Boxed Set
Spectre Within CD music
$23.69 Great Britain's JSP label took a chance in 2006 by issuing a four-disc overview of rembetika (the "officially designated" Greek underground and criminal communities) called Rembetika: Greek Music from the Underground. It was official because at one point in the 20th century, the music was actually officially banned by the Metaxas government (in 1937) and didn't peep above ground for another 11 years. (Gangster rappers and metalheads take heart: you were not the first nor will you be the last.) That set, like this one, appropriately titled Rembetika 2: More of the Secret History of Greece's Underground Music, included four CDs, all of which were annotated with fine notes, and production masters cleaned up as much as possible -- no easy feat since a lot of this music was originally released on either 78s or cylinders -- but some survived, amazingly, on recording tape. Charles Howard has done an excellent job of compiling and annotating this second box, and takes a different approach than on the first one. While the music was arranged according to the popularity, suppression, and eventual dissemination of rembetika on the first box, here the approach is strictly chronological, beginning with recordings made as early as 1908 and continuing until ...
