Chico Freeman showed a great deal of potential in the 1970s when the young tenor saxophonist recorded frequently. His profile has been a lot lower since that era, but he is still quite capable of playing rewarding music as he shows on this project, The Emissary, from 1995. Teamed with a group of San Francisco Bay-area musicians who form the Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, Freeman plays quite well on tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet. The music ranges from Latin jazz to world music, with a touch of reggae and pop, and a relatively straight-ahead "Seven Steps to Heaven." Since the Josh Jones group is essentially a rhythm section, Freeman is the main voice throughout and he comes up with plenty of creative ideas throughout this fairly accessible set. ~ Scott Yanow

International Affairs' problems -- with being overcooked, with trying to do too much -- are nonexistent on this handy summary of Vikter Duplaix's previously vinyl-only solo and collaborative work, released originally on MAW, Groove Attack, and K7. Gathered together from less-polished solo sessions (both under his own name and as Critical Point) and link-ups with the likes of Jazzanova and Wadud, Singles shows that Duplaix tends to turn in his best material when he's more concerned with raw feeling than slick precision. If you're remotely familiar with Duplaix, you won't be surprised to hear a mishmash of downtempo dance music and contemporary R&B. Shot on location in both Palestine and Israel, PARADISE NOW is an enthralling drama about the possible motivations and actions of two suicide bombers. Director Hany Abu-Assad meticulously researched the subject before co-authoring the script with colleague Bero Beyer, and fought off a few armed Palestinians in Nablus, which is where the bulk of the film's shooting took place. The story follows two young Palestinian men, Said (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), whose lives in the West Bank city have ground to a halt. But when a shadowy figure named Jamal (Amer Hlehel) offers them a shot at martyrdom by carrying out a suicide attack in Tel Aviv, the two men's lives are suddenly invigorated. The film follows their final days, as they grapple with their consciences, visit family and friends--and in Said's case, a young woman he has been flirting with--and prepare for the attack. But they find both practical and emotional issues stand in their way, leading to an anguished and entirely moving finale to Abu-Assad's film.
The difficult production of PARADISE NOW saw crew members abandoning the set amid fears for their lives, location manager Hassan Titi getting kidnapped, a land mine exploding 300 meters away from the set, and Prime Minister Yasser Arafat stepping in to aid the film. This is the kind of record that could only have appeared on an independent label like Righteous Babe. And while there's some excellent stuff on here, there's also far too much that could have used judicious editing. At points there are poetry slam lyrics ("Dog Grab Dog"), sophomoric political tracts disguised as entertainment ("Feminist Housewives" and "Search Light"), and the just plain stupid "Areola Prayer." But it's far from being an entire waste of space. When they nail things right, there's power in what this pair do, as on "Secret Candy," a searing piece of hip hop, or the wonderfully goofy "Croquet." The intent of being very political and pro-gay is all extremely worthy. But you have to think that in ten years they'll listen to this and cringe with the simplicity of the political positions they put forth -- life just isn't black and white any more.
