| | Allen Dobb Bottomland CD Allen Dobb Discography of CDs
While the progression of musical styles -- in every genre -- used to be a given, many artists in the '90s and beyond have chosen to delve into older approaches. Such is the complex case of Allen Dobb, an artist comfortable in a multitude of Americana stylings. On the title track that opens Bottomland and on a bluesy piece like "Rocks to Pick," Dobb has Southern rock circa 1974 written all over him. He delivers the lyrics with pride and vigor, as though he really meant them or maybe had lived them, and it would be easy to imagine him opening for a later version of Lynyrd Skynyrd. It comes as somewhat of a surprise, then, when Dobb reveals that he has another trick or two up his sleeve. While he maintains his deep, gruff vocals on "Beer Bottle Chandelier," the steel guitar turns this sad lament into a honky tonk weeper. That Dobb originates from Vancouver adds just one piece to this fun musical puzzle. The remainder of the material achieves a nice balance by mixing mandolins, acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel, and drums. Robyn Carrigan's harmony vocals blend nicely with Dobb's on "Beer Bottle Chandelier" and "The Ballad of Willie Holmes," adding a little something extra to these songs. While the pastiche of styles may leave the listener wondering who the real Dobb is, Bottomland is nonetheless a satisfying slice of Americana. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

| | Essential Willie Nelson CDs (2003) Limited Edition; Remastered
Bottomland album
$15.95 (MP3 Available for Download) This CD commemorates Willie Nelson's 70th Birthday (April 30, 2003).
The catalog of Willie Nelson is so vast and rich that assembling an "essential" collection of only one or two discs seems nearly impossible. RCA's single-disc 1995 attempt was admirable and worthy, but doomed by space limitations. ...

Bottomland CD music
$11.25 (MP3 Available for Download) RULES OF TRAVEL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Rosanne Cash started out at the vanguard of progressive country in the late '70s, but although you can't have deeper roots in country music than Johnny Cash's eldest child, she always had a broader vision in mind. Her definitive farewell to country came with 1993's THE WHEEL and she hasn't looked back since. Only one more album popped out in the 10 years between that ...
| | Ray Wylie Hubbard Growl CD (2003)
Bottomland MP3 Album
$14.05 Anybody who has followed the development of Ray Wylie Hubbard as an artist over the last dozen years or so has had to be keenly aware that he's been moving through changes in lyric style, melodic invention, and production styles. He's also been on a spiritual odyssey in his music that culminated on the excellent Eternal & Lowdown. Growl is a record of an awareness gained; it is expressed in the most basic, elemental physical and emotional truths (from humor to doubt to surrender to anger at hypocrisy) in these songs. The truth expressed on Growl -- the most aptly named of all Hubbard's recordings -- is in a dirty-hands, mud-romping, greasy, rock ...

| | Don Williams Best Of CD (1979) (Import) Germany
Bottomland MP3 Album
$9.69 This best-of collection culls from country star Don Williams's work for RCA, and includes 18 tracks, nine of which were hits.
Most performers warrant a single-volume greatest-hits package. Legends sometimes get two depending on whether or not there was a major division in their career or they switched labels. Don Williams has three and he needs it. Here's the kicker: Volume 2 is a better collection than Volume 1 was. There are 11 tracks here, and they capture Williams at the absolute peak of his powers, the mid- to late '70s. While it's easy to complain that a track or two were left off or one was included that shouldn't have been, Williams satisfies all the arguments here by issuing the cuts that sold ...
