When Nirvana and Pearl Jam exploded commercially in the early '90s and alternative rock became mainstream, a lot of '80s headbangers fell by the wayside. Pop-metal hair bands (Poison, Warrant) and gothic-themed fantasy metallers (Iron Maiden, King Diamond) both went out of vogue, and in this brave new rock world, the headbangers who were considered cutting edge embraced alternative metal (which could be anything from Ministry to Sevendust to Rage Against the Machine). But Doro is one '80s survivor who has kept plugging away; she isn't headlining Madison Square Garden, but still caters to a loyal group of die-hard fans. Released in 2002, Fight finds a 37-year-old Doro continuing to sound quite assured and passionate. The former Warlock vocalist makes a few alterna-metal-ish moves here and there, especially on the title track and "Descent" (which employs Type O Negative's Peter Steele). But Doro doesn't get nearly as far into alterna-metal as -- just to give one example -- Mötley Crüe graduate Tommy Lee. While Lee made a totally clean break from an '80s-like sound with his Methods of Mayhem project of 1999, Doro hasn't forgotten the '80s. In fact, many of the tunes are fairly '80s-sounding, including "Chained," "Fight By Your Side," and the power ballad "Legends Never Die" (which Kiss' Gene Simmons contributed). And for Doro's longtime fans, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Those who have been following the German goddess religiously since the '80s will probably take comfort in knowing that even though a few of the tunes make alterna-metal-ish moves, Fight is generally quite faithful to her history. Although 1989's Force Majeure remains Doro's most essential solo album, her hardcore followers will find 2002's Fight to be an inspired, focused, and rewarding addition to her catalog. ~ Alex Henderson

Fight
$14.45 1989 album for the German heavy metal/hard rock goddess. 13 tracks. Vertigo.
Personnel: Doro Pesch (vocals); Jon Devin (guitar); Tommy Henriksen (bass); Bobby Rondinelli (drums). In the 1980s, Warlock was among Germany's most exciting heavy metal bands -- which is saying a lot when you consider that Germany also produced Accept and the Scorpions. Lyrically, Warlock fell into the fantasy metal category; if you're a fan of headbangers like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Candlemass, and Ronnie James Dio, you owe it to yourself to have some Warlock albums in your collection. But when former Warlock vocalist Doro Pesch launched her solo career with 1989's Force Majeure, fantasy metal was not a high priority for the German singer. This album found the rough-voiced Doro taking more of a pop-metal approach; references to the supernatural aren't prevalent, and Force Majeure is closer to Crimes of Passion-era ...

| | Dimmu Borgir Enthrone Darkness Triumphant CD (1997) (Import) Argentina
Fight
$18.39 Deluxe edition of their breakthrough 1997 album includes the bonus track 'Raabjorn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde' and many enhanced goodies. Nuclear Blast. 2002.
Contains an untitled hidden track following " A Succubus In Rapture". Dimmu Borgir: Shagrath (vocals, guitar); Erkekjetter Silenoz (guitar); Stian Aarstad (piano, synthesizer); Nagash (bass); Tjodalv (drums, percussion). Recorded at Abyss Studios, Sweden in January 1997. Norwegian black metal doesn't get much more sweepingly epic than Dimmu Borgir's third LP, 1997's ENTHRONE DARKNESS TRIUMPHANT. While many black metal acts are strait-jacketed by genre orthodoxy, Dimmu Borgir took the opportunity to spread their dark wings, even abandoning their native Norwegian to write and record the album in English. The sound is far removed from the humble scrappy early black metal of Venom and their ilk, as ENTHRONE DARKNESS TRIUMPHANT unfolds with all the weight and grandeur of finely composed classical music. That's not to say it isn't brutal; in fact, the sheer size and power of the music remains dizzying. "Tormentor of Christian Souls" is a veritable ice storm of scouring guitars and pounding drums, with monolithic keyboards adding to the thickening atmosphere, while the stately, funereal "A Succubus in Rapture" weaves a cobweb of fetid gloom. One of the most important Scandinavian metal discs ever, Dimmu Borgir's ...
| | Ozzy Osbourne Speak Of The Devil (Uk) CD (1982) (Import) Germany
Fight
$9.89 excellent live performance of Ozzy/Black Sabbath's greatest hits. What's cool is that there are many songs on this album that aren't normally found outside their original recordings. "Never Say Die", "The Wizard", and "Symptom of The Universe" are killer hits that deserved their place on the performance stage. Ozzy and Brad Gillis know just how to do these cuts justice, and bring down the house with their performance. This is a clear, distinct recording, even including Ozzy talking to the crowd in-between songs.
Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Brad Gillis (guitar); Rudy Sarzo (bass); Tommy Aldridge (drums). Recorded live at the Ritz, New York, New York on September 26 & 27, 1982. Originally released as a 2-LP set. Digitally remastered by Brian Lee & Bob Ludwig. Immediately following the death of Ozzy Osbourne's dear friend and collaborator Randy Rhoads, tentative plans for a live recording from the Rhoads tours were quickly scrapped. Instead, the deeply troubled singer opted for a pair of one-offs at New York City's Ritz club. No one had any idea what Ozzy would do, and an evening of Black Sabbath covers was the furthest thing from everyone's mind. Ozzy had been portrayed as a washed-up, vocally challenged frontman by his ex-bandmates, and the perception was that Ozzy could no longer sing the original Sabbath material. Hiring metal producer Max Norman to man the boards, Ozzy enlisted Night Ranger guitarist Brad Gillis to play the role of Tony Iommi for the evening. The show itself took on an ominous tone with a chair visibly propped up on the edge of the stage; upon it rested a spiral notebook containing the lyrics to all the Sabbath songs of the evening, from which Ozzy read throughout the show. Still, Speak of the Devil is strengthened by the classic combo of Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge on bass and drums, undoubtedly one the best rhythm sections of Ozzy's solo career. And immediately, it becomes obvious that Brad Gillis was the right man for the gig. Playing Iommi to a tee, Gillis effortlessly leads the band through some of the best of the Sabbath catalog; Speak of the Devil ends up solid throughout, if somewhat unremarkable at times. Listening to the remastered version, there's no doubt that the vocals feature some heavily doctored patch-ups, but regardless, Ozzy proved his point to his ex-bandmates. Following the recording, due to the uncertainty surrounding the Ozzy camp, Gillis would jump ship and rejoin the ranks of Night Ranger. ~ John Franck Released in September 1982, DEVIL is Ozzy's third solo album and first live one. Recorded at NYC's Ritz, it closes a chapter in Ozzy's career with an all-Black Sabbath set, actually competing against his former bandmates as they released LIVE EVIL just a few months later. Ozzy's performance ...

Fight
$15.85 To-Mera: Julie Kiss (vocals); Lee Barrett (bass instrument). When an album is difficult to categorize, that is usually a positive thing; it means that the artist in question is striving for originality. Transcendental, the debut album by the part-British, part-Hungarian band To Mera, is such an album. This 2006 recording is metal, but To Mera do not pledge their allegiance to one type of metal exclusively. Instead, this complex, highly ambitious effort is probably best described as a blend of gothic metal, progressive metal and alternative metal. To Mera have some Dream Theater in their sound, but the haunting, goth-drenched lead vocals of Julie Kiss (formerly of Without Face) don't sound like anything one would hear on a Dream Theater album -- and while Transcendental is full of darkly ethereal melodies, the heavy, bonecrushing parts of this 52-minute CD are much more brutal than any of Dream Theater's riffs. Calling Transcendental a blend of gothic metal, prog metal and alt metal is not to say that those are To Mera's only influences; in terms of those, this band is all over the place. To Mera don't favor a simple verse/chorus/verse/chorus approach; their material is full of intriguing twists and turns, and they are likely to incorporate elements of styles ranging from black metal (minus the rasp vocals) to jazz ...
