"I wanna play guitar every day" go the words to "I Like Rock," the first song from Paul Gilbert's deceptively named 2002 solo album Burning Organ. Both the song and its message may at first seem overly simplistic, but they're actually quite accurate given Gilbert's obviously sincere happiness just to be holding his guitar and making it roar and squeak. After all these years in the rock & roll trenches, it's refreshing to find a guitar hero so incapable of taking himself seriously. In fact, unlike most of his peers in the shredding community, Gilbert not only handles singing as well as six-string chores, he also comes off as unnaturally well-adjusted and, well, happy. His playing is also surprisingly restrained considering his pedigree (Racer X, Mr. Big, etc.) and continued affiliation with the Shrapnel label (the house that shredding built), making for an album filled with songs featuring guitar solos, rather than solos disguised as songs. Despite this commendable attitude and unusually unselfconscious sense of humor, his songwriting as a whole is at best merely competent, at worst rather unimpressive. Still, album standouts like "Bliss," "I Am Satan," and "Amy Is Amazing" are far more memorable than the barrage of 16th notes regularly spewed by his masturbatory competitors -- his preexisting fans won't be disappointed. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| Burning Organ Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) A Guitar God Paul Gilbert should have been born in the 50's so he could be a guitar hero of the 70's.
Humorous, melodic hard rock and great guitar playing too. Submitted by a reviewer (Daytona) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Burning Organ sets speakers on fire. Paul Gilbert's tounge in cheak album is the most fun cd I've heard in years. I can't stop listening to it. If you enjoy fun music with excellent guitar work this is for you. Submitted by a reviewer (Indiana, U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Ultimate Party CD What a fun CD this is! For all those super talanted musicians out there who take themselves wayyyyy toooo seriously this CD is not for you! Paul Gilbert is certainly one of the best guitar talents in the music buisness today, but fortunatly he doesn't take himself too seriously, consequently this CD is a delightfull romp through heavy pop groove. Paul's tongue is firmly embetted in his cheek on this one. Five stars and counting!!! Submitted by blewis (Cedar Utah) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Surprised? You may be. I admit the only reason I got this on import was because it features the talents of a drummer named Marco Minnemann. All I new was Paul Gilbert was in Mr Big and considered quite a virtuoso musician. So the last thing I was expecting was an insanely catchy, tongue in cheek album full of the best pop/rock tunes I've ever heard, such as "I am Satan" and "My Religion". In fact "I like Rock" could be a Andrew WK song! Don't worry, as both Paul and Marco show off their serious chops the latter on the Osmonds "My Drum" cover, but a serious prog-rock chops fest this isn't. | | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Burning Organ CD music
$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.

| | Racer X Getting Heavier CD (2003)
Burning Organ music CDs
$13.85 There was a period in the late '80s where rock guitar was headed in a highly technical direction, where you'd have to practice on your instrument for hours upon hours to keep up with the players in your latest edition of Guitar for the Practicing Musician. One of the best examples of this was Racer X, which included not one but two "shredders": Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet. However, by 1989 the group was kaput when Gilbert decided to jump ship and join up with bass extraordinaire Billy Sheehan in pop ...

| | Paul Gilbert Spaceship One CD (2005)
Burning Organ album
$14.29 Whenever a new album comes out that features the guitar work of Paul Gilbert, it's anyone's guess as to what it'll sound like -- it could either be over-the-top shredding (à la Racer X) or melodic rock with an emphasis on pop hooks (à la Mr. Big). On his 2005 solo release, Spaceship One, Gilbert manages to somehow combine the two different musical worlds and also adds a splash of power ...

| | Black 47 Bittersweet Sixteen CD (2006)
Burning Organ CD music
$14.29 Black 47 and Gadfly Records were faced with a challenge in compiling a retrospective on the band, since, over the first 16 years of their existence, in addition to their self-released and Gadfly discs, Black 47 made recordings for three other companies -- two of them subsidiaries of major labels -- from which the music could not be licensed. The solution, of course, was to use other versions of some of the songs in question, and "to the rescue," as annotator and bandleader Larry Kirwan puts it, came disc jockey Vin Scelsa, "who provided a long lost live studio recording considered by many stronger than our actual CD performances." That made available six songs originally heard on out of print major-label albums like Home of the Brave and Green Suede Shoes. Then there are four tracks drawn from the Gadfly records; an early version of the song "Home of the Brave"; a previously unreleased early mix of "Funky Ceili"; and four previously unrecorded songs -- a cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," the Kirwan original "Southside Chicago Waltz," a cover of Brendan Behan's "Patriot Game," and an a cappella rendition of union organizer Joe Hill's poem "Joe Hill's Last Will." Kirwan provides his own assessment of the result: "The selection is in no sense definitive," he admits, "but provides a serviceable introduction for ...
