The 2 discs in this set were each originally released as bonus discs with The Vandermark 5's 2 previous releases, BURN THE INCLINE (2000) and ACOUSTIC MACHINE (2001). Features live arrangements of works by Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Carla Bley, Joe McPhee, Lester Bowie, Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Sun Ra, Frank Wright, Jimmy Guiffre, Julius Hemphill and Don Cherry. This release compiles and makes available for wider release the limited-edition bonus discs from the last two Vandermark 5 records, Burn the Incline and Acoustic Machine. On both, the band lovingly works over pieces by many of the pillars in free jazz, from Ornette to Giuffre, Ra to Hemphill. The exciting repertoire remains fresh (these compositions haven't exactly been overexposed) and gives the musicians plenty of room to groove and work their chops...which, by now, these Chicago players certainly have enough of to pull off this tribute project with excellent results. ~ Joslyn Layne

| | Jimmy Cliff Wonderful World, Beautiful People CD (1970)
Free Jazz Classics Vols. 1 & 2
$8.09 Recorded in Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Bob Garcia. Personnel: Jimmy Cliff (vocals). Liner Note Author: Bob Garcia. Recording information: Jamaica. Photographer: Richard Polak. Arranger: Larry Fallon. A fast follow-up to 1967's Hard Road, Jimmy Cliff's debut full-length, his self-titled album arrived in 1969. This second set would also introduce him to American audiences, with the set retitled Wonderful World, Beautiful People after the track selected as the first to be spun off on 45. The album would indeed charm the globe, its lavish arrangements, bouncy rhythms, and cheery lyrics gave Cliff his first international hit, breezing into the U.K. Top Ten and the U.S. Top 25. The powerful protest song "Viet Nam" followed "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" onto a single in the new year, and climbed even higher in the ...

| | Bobby Bare Moon Was Blue CD (2005)
Free Jazz Classics Vols. 1 & 2
$12.95 Personnel: Bobby Bare (vocals); Dennis Wilson , The Jeannie Bare Kids Choir (vocals); G Daddy, John Henry Jackson, John Jackson, G-Daddy, Chris Masterson (guitar); Pete Finney (steel guitar); David Steele (mandolin); Erin Hugely (cello); Doug Moffet (reeds, brass); Dennis Crouch, Mike Doster (bass instrument); Ben Martin (drums); Gary Kubal (percussion); Bobby Bare, Jr. (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Cindy Walker, Gordon Mote, Carey Kotsionis, Carol Anderson (vocals); Mark Nevers (guitar, piano, keyboards); Paul Burch (guitar, vibraphone, drums); Kenny Vaughn, William Tyler (guitar); Andrew Bird (violin); Nashville String Machine (strings); Barry Green, Steve Patrick (brass); Tony Crow (piano, keyboards); Brian Kotzur (drums). Audio Mixer: Mark Nevers. Recording information: The Beach House Recording Megaplex. Editors: Matt Rovey; John Kelton. Photographer: Alan Messer. Arranger: Lloyd Barry. In 2005, Bobby Bare was coaxed out of 22-year-long retirement from recording by his son Bobby Bare, Jr. to record The Moon Was Blue, a collection of 11 songs the veteran country outlaw always loved but, for the most part, never recorded. Bare Jr. teamed up with fellow country renegade Mark Nevers -- a Nashville veteran, but also a member of indie rock eccentrics Lambchop -- to provide production and assemble a backing band for Bare Sr., who would just pick the songs and sing. Bare chose a set of songs divided between pop standards like "It's All in the Game" and "Love Letters in the Sand," country classics like "Am I That Easy to Forget," folk-rock like "Everybody's Talkin'," and even a Shel Silverstein tune that he never got around to recording before ("The Ballad of Lucy Jordan"). His son and Nevers gave the songs quiet, moody arrangements ideal for lonely late-night listening, and while there are some arty touches scattered throughout the record, they're ...
| | Punk Goes 90'S CD (2006)
Free Jazz Classics Vols. 1 & 2
$11.55 The obvious follow-up to the PUNK GOES 80'S compilation and its similarly-themed companions, PUNK GOES 90'S features new-millennium punk-pop acts like Mae, Copeland, and the Killing Moon tackling Top 40 hits from the previous decade by folks ranging from Alanis Morrissette and the Gin Blossoms to Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana. Highlights include the Plain White T's doing a bubblegum rewrite of Blur's "Song 2" and Anberlin's take on Depeche Mode's stately "Enjoy the Silence." We all knew it was coming. Thanks to Fearless, punk had already gone metal, '80s, acoustic, and pop, so it was only a matter of time until the '90s also came under attack. And being that this is the decade most bandmembers on the album were likely starting to whet their musical palates, an album full of tributes to their favorites would no doubt be fun, right? Wrong. Let some advice be imparted: the point of a cover song is not for a band to simply try their best at sounding like the original band. The point (usually) is to take a song and, injecting one's ...
| | Graham Parker Don't Tell Columbus CD (2007)
Free Jazz Classics Vols. 1 & 2
$13.15 Personnel: Graham Parker (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, harmonica, kazoo, bass guitar, percussion, background vocals); Graham Parker; Molly Gardinia (vocals, background vocals); Kate Williams (vocals); Ryan Barnum, Ryan Barnum (keyboards); Kate Williams (background vocals); Mike Gent (guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals). Audio Mixer: Dave Cook. Recording information: LRS Recording Studio, Hurley, NY; Moon Landing, Boston, MA; Soundcheck Republic, Chatham, NY. Photographer: Julie Last. On 2007's DON'T TELL COLUMBUS, his third album for the Bloodshot label, Graham Parker continues the remarkable streak of records that he began on '04's YOUR COUNTRY. Although COLUMBUS lacks the punch of the preceding SONGS OF NO CONSEQUENCE, it finds the beloved British pub-rock icon comfortably situated in Dylanesque singer-songwriter mode. (In fact, the buoyant, biting "Stick to the Plan" sounds like it could be an outtake from Dylan's MODERN TIMES). While many of the tunes on COLUMBUS have a catchy, upbeat feel, they are often lined with fierce or melancholy lyrics, proving that, three decades into his career, Parker proudly and assuredly maintains his signature caustic style. Depending on which album you get from Graham Parker these days, he's either set on reminding us that he's still capable of serving up the sort of lean and feisty rock & roll that ...
