| | Snowboy Para Puente CD Snowboy Discography of CDs
British musical chameleon and proponent of all things hip Snowboy has been known to wear many hats. Though the list includes internationally renowned DJ and jazz fusion agitator, he is probably best known as Britain's premier Latin jazz bandleader. Having been passed the torch by former teacher Robin Jones, salsa's U.K. godfather, Snowboy boldly blazes the trail across Europe with his barrier-breaking Afro-Cuban fusion sound. His 2002 release for the Cubop label, Para Puente features the funky arrangements, swinging rhythm section, and jazz fusion attitude that has captured hearts and commanded dancefloors far and wide. Snowboy and his cohorts kick things up a notch from previous releases with impossibly quick tempos, blistering solos, and interesting, folklore-laced arrangements, all performed with seemingly boundless energy. Outside Havana, it is so difficult to make it in the industry playing Afro-Cuban music, and many bands sound disjointed, like groups of hired guns. Snowboy & the Latin Section groove effortlessly, like a single entity, as naturally as breathing. With fat, funky, and yet clear-sounding traditional instruments alongside some daring modern innovations on the standard (B-3 instead of piano and a miniMoog here and there), Para Puente has a truly unique character. For those who love the clave and yet hunger for something different, Snowboy has a record for you. Well, you and Puente. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
Recorded at Blah St. Studios, Odiham, England.

Para Puente album
$8.79 Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Helmed by Ichaso (PINERO) with documentary-like realism, and carried by Anthony, who bears a striking (albeit thinner) resemblance to Lavoe, EL CANTANTE thoughtfully depicts the rise and fall of a remarkably talented vocalist unable to shake debilitating addiction. Husband and wife in real life, Anthony and Lopez reveal a convincing chemistry, and the movie bolsters the Puchi role to give J. Lo more screen time, an aesthetic decision than allows her gentle-yet-determined presence to play off of Anthony's troubled Lavoe. While off-stage drama receives its share of attention in EL CANTANTE, the film also wisely shines the spotlight on Lavoe's charismatic performances, which are captured with grace and gusto by Anthony, a beloved singer in his own right. For fans of Lavoe, Anthony, and Lopez, this labor-of-love project is a must-see biopic that ...

The opening chords of the number-one smash "Shining Star" begin a very special record. The song's positive lyrics are laid over a fabulous groove and arrangement. A smooth trumpet piece leads into the soprano harmonies ...

Para Puente album
$10.15 Al Goodwin and the art of the singer/songwriter. Twelve songs written and recorded by one man on his acoustic guitar at various stages of his life, has been a long time coming, but "Celebrate" is much more than a personal hymn to love, life and friendship. Al Goodwin is part of a new breed of singer/songwriters who grew up with Punk and Indie. After playing in numerous bands throughout the Eighties and Nineties he left the music scene feeling unfulfilled and demoralised, but continued to write and play his own music, recording demos on his laptop at home.A chance meeting with producer/publisher Dave Whitelock of Smoking Frog Productions resulted in an offer to record at his studio in South Wales earlier this year. The result is twelve ...
