It's Wolf and Waits, Louie and Leonard (Cohen, that is). It's thumping bass that could be behind Charlie Feathers or J.B. Lenoir. It's a trap set from a burlesque theater and it's the kid who wanted to sound like Beiderbecke. It's Route 66 taking you Wes

Bob Koester's Chicago-based Delmark Records hasn't always reflected his personal tastes, but it has always reflected his philosophy. From the 1950s to the 2000s, Koester has generally believed in supporting indie jazz and indie blues -- in other words, the sort of jazz and blues artists who major labels tend to neglect. Although Koester never really cared for avant-garde jazz -- his personal preferences are blues and very straight-ahead bop, swing, and Dixieland -- he's been great about documenting Chicago's AACM artists because he sees them as part of the indie music culture. The Delmark Sessions isn't a typical Delmark release; Frank Morey isn't jazz, and he isn't a blues artist per se (although he does provide the occasional blues-rock gem). Rather, the guitar-playing singer/songwriter favors a very bluesy, gritty approach to folk-rock and roots rock -- The Delmark Sessions is the sort of CD that would be more typical of Rounder or Flying Fish than Delmark. And yet, it is faithful to Delmark's history in that it is great indie roots music. Morey has a throaty, hoarse, rough-edged vocal style that recalls early Tom Waits and also underscores his appreciation of Chicago blues icon Howlin' Wolf -- The Delmark Sessions isn't dominated by the sort of 12-bar offerings that one finds on Wolf's CDs, but Morey is obviously well aware of Wolf's vocal style. He also has a healthy appreciation of early rock & roll -- and of course, rock & roll is a term that one will seldom hear in connection with a Delmark release. But again, Morey has such a rootsy, bluesy, rugged spirit that he does, in fact, belong on Delmark. If The Delmark Sessions is a rare example of Koester's label putting out a rock-friendly disc, it is a highly rewarding example. ~ Alex Henderson

Living Blues (5/03, p.73) - "...Honest and hearty, blues- and folk-derived music....Their rocking rhythms, foursquare emotions and true-ringing poetic imagery are an exciting and refreshing take on blues-inspired music..."

The tradition of Texas blues is as wide as Texas itself. Sometimes it is easy to wonder if new blood can be struck from the same old vein. Just the opposite would be true of Holland K. Smith. In this, his second CD for Topcat records, Holland has achieved a consistency of feeling that is rare in today's blues recordings. His song writing is a breath of cool air in a crowded train car, something too refreshing to go un-noticed. The band used by Smith for the session was comprised of Eric Mathew on upright and Fender bass, and the superb drumming of Kevin Schermerhorn. Along with 'Gentleman' John Street on keyboards and the White Trash horn section featuring Steve Howard on trumpet ...

Making sure that country-blues starts the 21st century off on the right foot, Guy Davis' Butt Naked Free, whose title was inspired by the comments of Davis' young son, is one of the most accomplished statements the genre has offered in a few years. Picking up where 1998's You Don't Know My Mind left off, Davis once again has decided to fill out his sound, but this time adding touches of mandolin, organ and accordion, with the results being altogether more satisfying and never sounding even slightly overproduced. Where Davis on his previous album sounded, at times, unsure of his new direction, Butt Naked Free rocks with a loose liveliness, still allowing Davis' derivative yet idiosyncratic sound to shine through. "Waiting on the Cards to Fall" and "Never Met No Woman Treats Me Like You Do," the latter with Levon Helm contributing drums and mandolin, showcase how well Davis' sound fills out and offers the unique experience ...
