Adrian Crowley offered up subdued melancholia on the rerelease of A Strange Kind, an orchestral and sad nine-song effort. Songs like "Slow Fuse" set a morose emotional climate for the album, while "Emotional Playground" chimes in with a lighter guitar and Crowley's trademark dramatic and soulful vocals. On "The Cage of My Ribs," Crowley creates a brooding atmosphere, his howling rising above everything. The instrumental "Trilogy" feeds off the album's downbeat energy, and includes a haunting piano performance by Crowley. The disc winds down with the restrained "Sister of Mine" and the airy "Safe House," on which Crowley puts his best foot forward, showcasing a delicate guitar and his echoing vocals. Recorded in Dublin in 1997-1998, Crowley played most of the instruments on the album himself, recruiting the help of percussionists Rabada and Thomas Haugh on select tracks, cellist Clifford Rees on two songs, while Donal O'Mahonny performed the e-bow on the closing track. Originally recorded and released in 1999, New Jersey's Ba Da Bing Records rereleased the remastered A Strange Kind in 2002. ~ Stephen Cramer
Following the release of Adrian Crowley's latest record, When You Are Here You Are Family, Ba Da Bing! is proud to make his first album from 1999, A Strange Kind, available on these shores for teh first time. Hailed by magazines that existed at the time ("His brand of melancholic elegance never fails to send shivers down the spine," said Melody Maker, as they counted down their final days) and those still around ("As poetic a lyricist as the likes of Nick Drake or Jeff Buckley any day," said Hot Press), A Strange Kind is a striking collection of melancholy folk music, direct and unpretentious. For the domestic release of A Strange Kind, the songs have been remastered, and a video for "Trilogy" can be enjoyed by the technologically abled.
Personnel: Adrian Crowley (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, alto saxophone, piano, percussion).
Recording information: Fusebox, Dublin, Ireland (1997-1998).

Strange Kind album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Strange Kind CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. ...
| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Strange Kind music CDs
$11.25 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same musical course as EMOTIONALISM and MIGNONETTE on major-label debut I AND LOVE AND YOU, despite the presence of hands-on producer Rick Ruben. The country-folk duo continue to add elements of pop and hillbilly rock to a country/bluegrass foundation on the 2009 LP, a record with a newfound emphasis on piano and nuanced arrangements. Working with a larger budget allows the group to add small flourishes ...

Lamb of God's fan cult only grew with 2004's Ashes of the Wake, the Virginia metal band's first for Epic, and their hit status prompted this great reissue of their debut full-length. Burn the Priest is as unsubtle as its name implies, a nervy and volatile prototype of the thrash/death/hardcore hybrid that Lamb of God would eventually preach. If Pantera had recorded Vulgar Display of Power for Relapse, it might've ...
