A breed of fire-breathing dragon emerges after long years of sleep, setting fire and destruction, creating dominance over the human race. "If You Can't Stand the Heat" Pyrotechnics & Special Effects Featurette; Trailer; "Breathing Life Into The Terror" Sci-fi Featurette; Conversations with Rob Bowman. Stars Christian Bale, David Kennedy, Gerard Butler, Izabella Scorupco, Matthew McConaughey, Scott Moutter - Director: Rob Bowman. In present-day London, 10-year-old Quinn visits his construction engineer mother at her work. When he crawls into a cavern the workers have uncovered, he finds a large, fire-breathing dragon--which destroys the site and kills his mother. Fast-forward to 2020. Quinn (Christian Bale, AMERICAN PSYCHO) is living in a castle in Northumberton, the leader of survivors of the dragon plague which has wiped out a large portion of the human population. He and his colony, including dozens of orphans, eke out an existence in hopes that the human race will someday take back the planet from the gigantic, winged monsters. Enter Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), a war-mad American and his team of military trained fighters. They offer to team up with Quinn and his people, but only if they consent to the American's extreme tactics to destroy the fire-breathing beasts.
Directed by Rob Bowman (X FILES), REIGN OF FIRE combines elements of ALIENS, THE ROAD WARRIOR, and 1981's DRAGONSLAYER for a potent genre cocktail that takes a traditionally medieval monster into the future and injects it into state-of-the-art action sequences. The film plays as post-apocalyptic sci-fi, but the stunningly executed dragon sequences are pure horror, especially as the menacing creatures slaughter prominent characters with extreme speed and ruthlessness. Dragonslayer meets Roadwarrior This is a curious little movie from the director of the X-Files movie (Rob Bowman). Is it Roadwarrior? Is it Dragonslayer? Is it Aliens? Is it Godzilla? The answer is that Reign of Fire is a mishmash of elements from all of those movies along with a slew of other sci fi and fantasy clichés. But Bowman manages to make this patchwork premise work.
The movie begins in present day London when miners uncover a race of dragons who have been sleeping for centuries underground. Jump to twenty years later when the dragons have all but wiped out the human race. The focus is on fire chief Quinn (Christian Bales) and the band of survivors under his care living in an old castle. They try to live quietly and out of sight of the dragons, but when the dragons attack, the firemen go to work. Enter the American Marine Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey) and his troops. They plan to take the fight back to the dragons and look for assistance from Quinn?s people. This messes up the relatively quiet life these people have been living and explodes into an all out war with the dragons.
Reign of Fire is a strange mixture of Medieval fantasy and sci fi that works more often than it does not. The story does not make too many attempts to heavily engage the brain, but it is good popcorn fare. There are plenty of lapses in logic, but the action moves along quick enough that you do not have time to think about things like that. The special effects are high caliber and the main characters are strong enough that they do not take a backseat to the visuals. Overall, it is worth a look when you are in the mood for some entertainment that will not tax your brain too heavily.
The DVD contains a few extras including a mildly interesting documentary on the making of the film.

This movie was a downer :( I'm a huge fan of fantasy/epic dragon type movies. This movie SUCKED. It was slow throughout with minimal special effects - the dragon would show up for a few seconds and dissapear again. Scenery boring, characters boring and one sided...nothing special about it...not my number 1 recommendation. Submitted by violetta_1984 (Toronto, Ontario Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Twenty years later as a "fire chief," he tries to keep a group of refugees alive with fierce dragons dominating the air, burning the land and feeding on the ash. Unexpectedly, Van Zan (McConaughey), a hotshot American militia leader, shows up with a ragtag group of slayers on a perilous crusade to hunt down and destroy the beasts. Tempers flare when there is a struggle for leadership -- until both men realize only one species is getting out of this alive.
