Time Is Free album
$5.95 Ponty kicked off the '80s with an anomalous jolt of electronicized jazz funk. Fusion had begun to recede into small, underground pockets, hiding its head in fear, overwhelmed by bad muzak and the rejuvenation of tepid traditionalism. Experimentalism was left to other genres, but Ponty plowed on, updating his sound to reflect the changing technological flavors of the time. On CIVILIZED EVIL, he let his obvious love for electronics and science fiction advance to the fore.
"Demagomania" is a bass-driven showcase for Chris Rhyne's wedges of prog synth and Ponty's intergalactic violin bursts. "Forms of Life" is Ponty lost in ...

| | Chick Corea Three Quartets CD (1981)
Time Is Free music CDs
$8.09 Between the tides of Return To Forever and The Elektric Band, Chick Corea's recording projects focused on more intimate acoustic ensembles. Of these, the superb THREE QUARTETS is the best of the bunch. Recorded in 1981 at Corea's own Mad Hatter studio, it features the pianist at his creative best as well as his favorite partners Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez and the inimitable Steve Gadd. Few other records of this period contain the powerful musical energy that was created when these four virtuosos came together.
The performances captured on this album are stunning. The complex "Quartet No. 1" offers a punchy melody that explodes ...
| | Chris Potter Gratitude CD (2001)
Time Is Free songs
$12.35 Saxophonist Chris Potter honors the legacy of some of jazz's greats on Gratitude, his debut for Verve. The award-winning virtuoso and composer is compelling on his tributes to John Coltrane, Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker, and several other legendary saxophonists. Gratitude contains nine original compositions written by Potter, who plays tenor saxophone on the majority of the songs, switches to soprano saxophone on "Eurydice," his tribute to Wayne Shorter, and plays the alto saxophone and Chinese wood flute on "Star Eyes," the tribute to Charlie Parker. Chris Potter is outstanding on bass clarinet on his composition "The Visitor" for Lester Young and captures the ambience that reflects the many styles of these accomplished players, including sliding from one note to a higher or lower note with intermediate pitches on "The Source," his tribute to the glissandi (sheets of sound) of John Coltrane, and capturing the dense, soulful sound of Joe Henderson on "Shadow." Gratitude also includes a song titled ...
| | Lenny White Adventures Of Astral Pirates CD (1978)
Time Is Free album
$9.69 Jazz/funk/fusion title by Lenny, originally released in 1978. 11 tracks. 2002.
One of Lenny White's finest, most essential albums, The Adventures of Astral Pirates is a jazz-fusion masterpiece with a futuristic science-fiction theme. Star Wars was number one at the box office when, in 1977, White produced this disc with Al Kooper, and perhaps Elektra was hoping to cash in on the film's popularity. If you open the record's foldout cover, you can read White's tale of sci-fi battles ...

| | Mike Mcclure Camelot Falling CD (2005)
Time Is Free album
$9.79 A familiar song will often offer a way to tune into an unfamiliar band. While Mike McClure has recorded before, Camelot Falling nonetheless includes the familiar opener "Into the Mystic" for those unfamiliar with the band. It's a brave choice, picking a very familiar Van Morrison song, because there's really little chance of making a better version. McClure and company nonetheless do a good job, and in doing so, get the listener's attention. Here, and on songs like "Where the Wild Ones Run," the Mike McClure Band concoct a Hootie meets Jakob Dylan sound, filling each song with organ, electric guitar, and rough-and-ready harmony on the choruses. McClure isn't a one-trick pony, though, so it's a pleasant jolt when he cuts loose with hardcore alternative country on "Eden Burning/Camelot Falling." "Modelo," with its prominent Dobro, even shows that he knows how to play traditional country. There's also a fine rendition of Neil Young's ode to smoking ...
