The low-key nature of Mark Knopfler's third solo album (discounting soundtracks) won't be a surprise to those who are familiar with its fine predecessor. The biggest change from SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA is the focus on traditional/roots styles. Throughout much of RAGPICKER's dream, Knopfler comes on like a one-man Harry Smith's Anthology, touching on folk, country, and blues. As often as not, however, he brings it closer to home with UK folk flavoring, as on the opening "Why Aye Man." He also displays more of a sense of humor here, on the old-timey "Quality Shoe" and the western swing number "Daddy's Gone to Knoxville."
The title track sounds like it could have come off the first Tom Waits album, and several cuts here wouldn't sound out of place on any given Richard Thompson recording. Though one of Knopfler's consistent faults remains his tendency to drag things on for too long, his husky, intimate singing is effectively understated and he shows a healthy disdain for guitar showmanship that's remarkable considering his prodigious six-string abilities. Slightly more downshifted and rootsy than PHILADELPHIA, RAGPICKER'S DREAM nonetheless serves as its worthy companion piece.

Rolling Stone (11/14/02, p.88) - "...A picturesque collection of folksy, mostly acoustic vignettes that works its old-fashioned magic in mysterious ways....Oddly compelling..." Q (10/02, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This is pretty fine...rich arrangements more reminiscent of [his] soundtrack work..." Mojo (Publisher) (10/02) - "...Nothing egocentric here. And there's always that majestic guitar's redemptive clarity." Heart wrenching I've been listening to this album for a couple of years now. The guitar tones
are varied and beautifully rendered. The writing is incredible.
Everything is there, hard biting irony, tenderness, harsh reality, escapism.
I like the variety of Brit-folk and old timey tunes, but my favorites are "You don't know you're Born" and "Hill Farmer's Blues", the two songs on the album that sound vaguely like Dire Straits. The clean, Baritonesque guitar tones on the former are some of the best recorded, ever. The biting, sarcastic lyrics are well placed. I know way too many people that don't know what real life is like. These words are for them. And the build up to the ambient wash of distorted electric tones on "ill Farmer", it's just one of the most dynamic, poingant musical moments in my rememberance. It sounds just like a thunder storm heading your way. Mark is a veteran with an excellent body of work behind him, and I believe lots more to come. Submitted by KevinK (Hood River, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Asleep Compared to the work Mark did with Dire Straits this cd is awful. Mark sounds like he's about to fall asleep at any moment. All the songs are sung the same way.No variety. Submitted by Fram (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$7.19 "There's a staggering, slow burning power to everything they do...That's even more apparent live"- John Mulvey NMEIdaho People Like Us Should Be Stopped - Live Volume One Idaho MusicPeople Like Us Should Be Stopped is not only an incredible live album--taken from shows in Scotland, England and Arizona during 1993, showcasing what this Los Angeles band is capable of onstage--it's also an amazing look into what was happening with the lives of the band (both individual and collective) at that time. As guitarist John Berry puts it in the album's liner notes: "It was a difficult and gloomy time." Half the band was kicking heroin, Berry had his pedal board nipped after the first show, others skipped dinner for six martinis on an empty stomach before playing, someone got into a fistfight with another band for eating his hotdog and would go on to play a show with a broken needle in his arm. Difficult and gloomy indeed! As one would expect after all that, there is some amazing musical tension here, and even though this album was remastered from bootlegged recordings whose original sound quality is suspect, People Like ...

Ragpicker's Dream
$20.39 2007 anthology that summarizes the pub rock scene of late 1970's and early 80's! All the biggest artists are here, including Kilburn & The High Roads (featuring Ian Dury), Eggs Over Easy, Dr Feelgood, The Kursaal Flyers, Mickey Jupp, Brinsley Schwarz (featuring Nick Lowe), Bees Make Honey, The Pirates, Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Chas & Dave, The Count Bishops, Meal Ticket, Nine Below Zero, The Cartoons and more.
A little over ten years after the first great double-disc pub rock set -- EMI's Naughty Rhythms -- comes the second, Castle's Goodbye Nashville, Hello Camden Town: A Pub Rock Anthology. Naughty Rhythms was essentially a primer, relying heavily on the few stars the genre ever produced: Brinsley Schwarz made multiple appearances, as did Kilburn & the High Roads, Dr. Feelgood, and Eddie & the Hot Rods, which was only proper given their prominence in the pubs. Goodbye Nashville digs a little deeper, unearthing many bands that didn't show up on Naughty Rhythms and emphasizing the rootsy country-rock that was certainly a key inspiration in the movement. Sometimes this comes at the expense of stretching the style's somewhat amorphous definition a little bit, but not so much that anybody that'd be inclined to pick up this collection would care. All the country boogie and blues shuffles here fit within the same world, one that is built on old-time rock & roll and lazily stretches into country-rock and folky harmonies, ...
