This elegant and funky follow-up to the saxman's debut Foreward carries the cool vibe of that disc to deeper extremes while also showing a richer diversity in the veteran saxman's artistry. Jaared's chief alto sax influence is David Sanborn, and he's been inspired in recent years by Nelson Rangell. Yet going back further, he's a huge fan of legends like Ace Cannon, Boots Randolph, and Stan Getz. He delves into a bit of fusion and even bebop on "Searchlight." There's a colorful Latin flavor on "Ibizi," written by keyboardist and label founder Marcus Johnson about an island off the coast of Spain (the track features guitarist Ken Navarro). The previous year, Jaared had been doing numerous Midwest and East Coast dates with guitarist Peter White, and this joyful experience is reflected in "Happy Time," a spirited light funk gem featuring the guitarist's trademark acoustic style. While a solid songwriter and producer in his own right, Jaared loves the art of collaboration and on Hangtime hands the production reins to Johnson (who produces five tracks and co-produced another) and Nate Smith (who does four tracks). Johnson's include the heavy grooving "Make It Happen," which was originally written by keyboardist Patrick Cooper as an intro theme to the nationally syndicated, D.C.-based talk show 8101; the lush, Latin-tinged "Ibiza"; a unique, percussive twist on Ambrosia's "How Much I Feel," featuring Jaared himself singing the vocal chorus; a beautifully intimate reading of Poco's "Crazy Love," performed as a duet with guitarist Stan Cooper; and the bouncy, optimistic "Happy Time." Johnson co-produced the heavily urban-vibed "Sensation" with Jackiem Joyner, another saxman signed to Marimelj, who wrote and recorded the original demo of the song. Though Jaared's primary instrument is the alto sax, this tune is a beautiful showcase for his incredible soprano virtuosity. The set closes with a live, heartfelt version of "Foreward: I Love You," the title track from Jaared's debut. ~ Jonathan Widran

Hangtime Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Whoa!!!!!! Who in the heck is TheTruthBSpoken in The Astral Universe? How many Recordings do you have out? Where is your name in CD sales? And Kenny G couldn't come close. This has a good solid precise sound. GREAT!!!! Submitted by hargisP (Ca, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
WHOA!!!!! IT MADE ME PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY AND HURL!! This is PITIFUL!! 80s cookie-cutter "pop-jazz" that PLAYED out back in the Kenny G days.
Save your money on this one folks. Not worth the disc it's pressed upon. Submitted by TheTruthBSpoken (The Astral Universe) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
WHOA!!!!!!!!!! It made me pull off the highway and buy it!!! I was driving down I-95 between DC, and Baltimore. Since it was a rainy nasty day between the two (2) cities, all i could think of was just to finish working, and get out of this storm. I tuned up to WEAA- "Playing Jazz That Separates Us From The Rest!!!(Morgan State University Radio Station), and heard this crankin' groove with monster horn parts, and a sax playing a mind blowing solo. The jam was crankin so hard, i had to pull out the cell phone, call 411, and get the number to the station, just so i could find out who they were jamming. A very lovely woman told me the song was called "Search Light" from the new CD by Jaared. After we talked, i went out and bought it. Man,....that boy is jammin. Scale of 1-10. He gets a 14!!!! I guess hangin' around Marcus Johnson paid off. Submitted by a reviewer (Lanham, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hangtime synonymous with Goodtime "Hangtime" the follow up CD to "Foreward" ,(Jaared's growth from the embryonic 'urban groove style'which launched his recording career )is something that will appeal to every musical palette. The diversity of style and guest artists truly introduces this young man onto the smooth jazz contenders list . Not only does he have talent , but a passion and maturity that comes across in this cornea copia of saxual pleasure .The more you listen to "Hangtime" , the more it grows on you .I have both CD's and I love this one , can't wait to see where it will take him ......:D Submitted by a reviewer (VA USA) Was This Review Helpful?
