$20.79 Compared with Buffalo Bop's usual rockabilly and teen-rebel collections, this 33-song compilation is kind of dorky -- sort of a nerd's picture of rock & roll (the Richie Cunningham as opposed to the Fonzie playlist). Nobody appearing on this CD ever aspired to be really cool like Elvis or Gene Vincent; Ricky Nelson was as far as they got. But it's all great fun in its well-crafted, highly produced way, and some of the artists and labels here will actually be familiar--Tony Orlando ("The Loneliest"), Steve Lawrence ("Pretty Blue Eyes"), Milo Liggett ("Gold and Silver"), and the Barker Brothers ("Hey Little Mama") recorded for outfits like Monument, Epic, ...

Squeeze album
$12.85 A huge departure for this masked, previously all-instrumental surf quartet, their fifth album is, as indicated by its title, augmented by vocals. But not just any vocals. Eleven out of the 13 tracks boast a different singer (Big Sandy, who also toured with the band in 2001, appears twice) adding just the right touch to the disc's eclectic covers of rockin' soul (los Bravos' "Black Is Black" with the Mavericks' Raul Malo), British Invasion-styled pop ("Bumble Bee" with a rare vocal from Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell), good-time roots (Nick Lowe is guest lead bassist on his own "Shake That Rat," one of the disc's two instrumentals), weepy string-laden '60s ballads (Sixpence None the Richer's Leigh Nash gives a perfectly frail reading of Skeeter Davis' "End of the World"), Cramps-style high octane swamp (Reverend Horton Heat toughens up Roy Orbison's "Down the Line"), their usual twisted, twangy, hang-ten surfin' sufari (a husky voiced Dave Alvin sounds perfect on "California Sun"), and Link Wray-styled, reverb-laden scrappy punk (the Trashmen swing through a tight "A Huevo"). At only 34 minutes, it's a little on the short side, but there is a crisp conciseness to the tracks -- the majority of which run less than three minutes -- that harks back to the ...

Squeeze CD music
$20.19 30 tracks, w. Walt Benton, Eddie McKinney, Charlie Gore, Jerry Parson, Ron Berry, Jerry Siefert, Jerry Fuller+
This is a pretty uneven collection, which is not surprising given the fact that the title track by Reggie Perkins is one of the coolest things here and it's from a juvenile delinquency B-movie of the same name. The Jays' "Panic Stricken" is pretty fair rock & roll, but "Jitterbug Joe" is one of those minor embarrassments of the genre, a silly novelty tune. Ronnie Allen's "High School Love" sets the middle-range here, a pleasant, serviceable but undistinguished piece of rock & roll that doesn't quite come off, missing the cues that would make it a good record. Jerry Parsons' "Undecided" represents the more countrified sound well enough, and Lee Dresser's "Thinking 'bout Your Love" is a good piece of mainstream rock & roll, with a full band (with sax). Bill James' "School's Out" sounds a lot like a later Cadillacs' number (specifically "Please Mr. Johnson"), a comic novelty piece complete with basso-voice ...
| | Hasil Adkins Look At That Caveman Go!! CD (1993)
Squeeze music CDs
$13.29 Released on roots-rock indie label Norton Records (founded by ex-Cramps drummer Miriam Linna and partner Billy Miller), LOOK AT THAT CAVEMAN GO!! is a collection of live cuts that mix favorite covers with loopy Hasil Adkins originals. Sex and pursuit of the fairer sex is a mainstay of Adkins' songs, and when he's not breathing hard and playing dissonant guitar chords during "Hammer Hunch (The Crusher)" (which refers to a lascivious '50s dance), he's railing at being mistreated throughout the chugging "Mean Mean Woman."
About the only time Adkins slows the pace is on such down-and-out ...
| | Flaming Lips Transmissions From The Satellite Heart CD (1993)
Squeeze songs
$9.29 TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE SATELLITE HEART is a perfect example of post-modern ear-candy: sour, rough and skewed on the outside, lusciously sweet and logically structure-less on the inside. It is a Beatles record with Eno at the controls. While the guitar tones are more akin to laser beams than to standard Gibsons, and the effects-laden vocals casually melt into any form of incidental noise (keyboards, feedback, whatever), songs like "Turn It On" and "She ...
| | Start Death Via Satellite CD (2003) Extended Play
Squeeze album
$6.99 Initially released as a self-titled EP by the tiny imprint Smallstone in mid-2002, Death Via Satellite finds theSTART regrouped and ready for a new beginning. Signed to Nitro in late 2003, this mini-package doesn't differ from the original except for the foxy artwork. It's a great start for those unfamiliar with the Los Angeles band's intoxicating punky dance sound while also being a must-have for completists. The band's 2001 new wave blast debut, Shakedown!, left fans hungry for more, so this six-song mini-album ...
