| | Spring Heel Jack Amassed CD Spring Heel Jack Discography of CDs
The transformation of Spring Heel Jack into its own brand of avant electronic jazz continues with Amassed, rather logically following up on the previous year's Masses as another entry in the "Blue Series." Performers like Evan Parker and Matthew Shipp once again return, accompanied by a slew of fellow improvisational musicians (drummer Han Bennink, trombonist Paul Rutherford, and bassist George Trebar among them). If not a regular performing group capturing a nuanced sound, the lineup readily demonstrates both the abilities of the performers and the relaxed-but-on-point edge of the overall performance ("Wormwood" is a fine standout, Bennink's drumming an understated but crucial part of the arrangement). There's also a ringer from the rock world -- Spiritualized's Jason Pierce, who had Spring Heel Jack as an opening act back in 1997 and whose interest in free jazz makes him a perfect addition. He contributes to four tracks in particular, including "Maroc," written by Pierce and Parker, with the saxophonist ripping out some frenetic work while Pierce's guitar contributes tense shading and feedback shreds in the background. The air of Amassed in general is much like Masses in that the combination of on-the-spot work and collaboration and careful studio arrangement becomes blurry -- one suspects just as much work went into the arranging of this as, say, In a Silent Way, but that's hardly a bad role model to have. John Coxon and Ashley Wales' joint ear for a moody roil of activity -- rarely so explosive as to be overwhelming, never so calm as to be nonexistent -- sets and keeps the tone. On the occasions where the ensemble completely lets loose -- the title track in particular is a rampage and a half, while "Duel" kicks up a fair amount of noise while still keeping space in the arrangements -- the results almost always satisfy. ~ Ned Raggett

Amassed album
$14.29 Jazz and electronica mated many times before NU BOP, on both the electronic side (Squarepusher, Tied & Tickled Trio) and the jazz side (Erik Truffaz, Graham Haynes), but seldom so purposefully and definitively as on this recording by boundary-pushing pianist Matthew Shipp. While Shipp is joined here by three esteemed downtown jazzers, the addition of the colorfully named Flam on electronics takes NU BOP that extra step from acoustic, '60s-inspired avant garde ...
| | John Zorn Iao CD (2002)
Amassed CD music
$13.19 This album, a studio suite, is wrapped in mysticism. The four cards that serve as a booklet feature cabalistic signs, esoteric diagrams, a quote from Alaister Crowley and a dedication to esoteric filmmaker Kenneth Anger. A short note by John Zorn establishing a parallel between the tools and craft of musical composition and magic is the only given explanation. The aura of mystery invites an analysis of the constituents and structures of the work, for better or worse -- and in any case it's fun to do on your own, so this reviewer will not expose his personal conclusions on the subject. The musicians involved are Cyro Baptista, Jennifer Charles, Greg Cohen, Beth Hatton, Bill Laswell, ...
| | DJ Spooky Optometry CD (2002)
Amassed music CDs
$13.85 Thirsty Ear's Blue Series has already been host to many progressive jazz projects, among them albums by William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Craig Taborn, Guillermo Brown, Mat Maneri, Tim Berne, and others. The label also did a project with British DJ drum'n'bass duo Spring Heel Jack that was neither a jazz album or a DJ record, but some strange amalgam unto itself. DJ Spooky's Optometry is the next installment in the Blue Series' DJ experiments, and it's one that succeeds on every level. For starters, Optometry is fully a DJ outing and fully a jazz record. The band playing with Spooky is comprised of Parker; Shipp; Brown; Medeski , Martin & Wood's Billy Martin; Joe McPhee; Carl Hancock Rux; and others. Spooky plays bass and kalimba besides his turntables and mixing board. He ...
| | Spring Heel Jack Live CD (2003)
Amassed songs
$14.65 Recorded live at The Corn Exchange, Brighton, England and The Michael Tippett Center, Bath, England on January 22 & 23, 2003.
John Coxon and Ashley Wales -- aka Spring Heel Jack -- have been mucking about melding their progressive electronic drum'n'bass experiments with jazz and improvising musicians from the United States and Europe. Two recordings, Masses and Amassed, were released in Thirsty Ear's Blue Series; a third focuses on a live presentation of their ambitious sonic inquiries, where electronic meets organic ...
