A long held-desire of Sinead O'Connor's was to record an album's worth of traditional Irish songs, many of which she learned growing up as a child in Ireland. SEAN-NOS NUA is that dream fulfilled and it features some of this firebrand's most stellar work. Employing a number of traditional Irish instruments (and musicians), O'Connor treats these songs with a delicate touch befitting her deep love of them. In addition to her reverential treatment of these songs, this native of The Emerald Isle provides detailed track-by-track annotations. Some songs double as prayers ("The Singing Bird") or children's skipping songs ("I'll Tell Me Ma'), while one evokes the heartbreak felt by the spouse of vanished explorer Sir John Franklin ("Lord Franklin").
Among the more familiar songs picked by O'Connor are the delicate "Molly Malone" and equally forlorn "Paddy's Lament." Furthering the Irish cause all the more, O'Connor enlists the legendary Christy Moore to duet on a nearly a capella reading of "Lord Baker." Rich and heartfelt, SEAN-NOS NUA is one of O'Connor's most personal outings since she broke onto the music scene in 1987.

I'm not Irish but after listening to this album, I sort of felt that way. The always bold Sinead O'Conner has released a compliation of Irish tunes spanning thousands of years. Putting a new spin on tradition, she pops it up a bit with drum machines, electirc guitars and that amazing O'Conner voice. She even admits that, although some of the songs are a bit "corny", she brings a heart to them that truly blooms. Though it's really not an album I consider driving to and it's not something that I'll have spinning all the time, it is a nice disc to add to your collection (especially if your a fan). It is rumored that this and her recent release are supposed to be her last, I truly hope that's false. The woman has heart and you can feel it.
If you have a strong Irish backgrond and have always wanted to break your parents or grandparents into modern music, I'd suggest having them give it a listen. It's quite a unique piece of worked.
Keep it up Sinead, we don't want to lose you just yet!

THIS C.D. IS MY FAVORITE OF HER WORK(S).
TRADITIONAL IRISH FOLK SONGS WITH AN UPDATED SOUND. THE ENTIRE C.D. SOUNDS HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL. A GENTLE ACCOUSTIC SOUND SURROUNDED BY STRINGS. WITH AN UNWILLINGNESS TO CHANGE THE LYRICS TO FIT HER GENDER. THIS C.D. HAS BECOME QUITE CONTRAVERSIAL. FROM THE FIRST TRACK TO THE LAST. THIS C.D. IS BEAUTIFUL. MY FAVORITE TRACKS ARE: 1. LORD FRANKLIN. 2. MOLLY MALONE. 3. PEGGY GORDON. MAKES ME WEEP! WELL DONE SINEAD!!!!!
