A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels Band provides a frankly terrifying "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-derived take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Skynyrd crunch through Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph Run" with Stones-like aplomb. On the originals front, .38 Special score big with "Mama's Song," a Southern rock power pop hybrid in their best '80s style, although it must be said that these self-proclaimed wild-eyed Southern boys have a sentimental streak a mile wide (and when their song is followed by Skynyrd's near-obscene "S
| | Allman Brothers Band Live At Fillmore East CDs (1971) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid; Deluxe Edition
Christmas
$20.35 The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Dickey Betts (guitar); Duane Allman (guitar, slide guitar); Berry Oakley (bass); Jai Johanny Johanson (drums, congas, timbales); Butch Trucks (drums, timpani). Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Duane Allman (guitar, slide guitar); Dickey Betts (guitar); Berry Oakley (bass instrument); Jai Johanny Johanson (drums, congas, timbales); Butch Trucks (drums, timpani). Additional personnel: Thom Doucette (harmonica). Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians' interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track. Far from being a sacrilege, this tactic helps present the Allmans in their best light, since even if the music isn't necessarily concise (three tracks run over ten minutes, with two in the 20-minute range), it does showcase the group's terrific instrumental interplay, letting each member (but particularly guitarist Duane and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg) shine. Even after the release of the unedited concerts, this original double album (sin
| | Cream: Royal Albert Hall CDs (2005)
Christmas
$19.49 Cream: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums); Jack Bruce (bass guitar). For one reason or another, Cream reunited in the spring of 2005, setting aside nearly 40 years of acrimony for a series of gigs at the Royal Albert Hall in May, which was later followed by a few shows at Madison Square Garden about a month after souvenirs of the London shows -- a double-CD set and a double-DVD set -- were released. By that time, tickets for the New York concerts were long gone, which was understandable, since Cream had not only remained a legendary band, but it seemed extremely unlikely that they would ever play live again, so the chance to see the original power trio in the flesh was tempting. Fans who anxiously awaited this reunion might find the record of the event, bearing the unwieldy title Royal Albert Hall: London 2-3-5-6 2005, a bit anticlimactic, or a mixed blessing at the very least. The chemistry between guitarist/vocalist Eric Clapton, bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, and drummer Ginger Baker is still palpable on this compilation of highlights from the four Royal Albert Hall shows -- it's just quite a bit more subdued than it was the last time they played together, which, discounting a one-off reunion at their 1993 induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, was 36 years ago. That's a long time ago and the guys are no longer restless young psychedelic bluesmen -- at time of the concerts, Eric Clapton had just turned 60, Jack Bruce was a couple weeks shy of his 62nd birthday, Ginger Baker was 65. Of course, they're hardly the only group of '60s veterans who have remained active -- the Rolling Stones released a new album of material a month before this live album, and they're all in their sixties, but there's a big difference between the two bands, and that's that the Stones kept playing together throughout the past four decades. While all three members of Cream remained relatively active (Baker recently had retired to his ranch, but kept playing pr
| | Toto: Greatest Hits Live And More DVD (2002)

$8.29 The adult-contemporary band Toto--initially comprised of Steve Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Robert Toteaux, and David Hungate--hit the stratosphere with its 1982 Grammy Award winner for best album, TOTO IV. This effort (the group's best-known work) spawned the multi-platinum singles "Rosanna" and "Africa," but the band had already released several critically championed albums by that point: 1978's TOTO (with the best selling-single "Hold the Line"), 1979's HYDRA, and 1981's TURN BACK--all of which sported anthems that became iconic benchmarks of early '80s soft rock. The group continued to tour over the following decades, despite a series of slight critical disappointments and the death of one of its key members, Jeff Porcaro. Toto experienced a striking renaissance on Valentine's Day 2006, however, with the issue of the critically championed FALLING IN BETWEEN. TOTO: GREATEST HITS LIVE AND MORE compiles footage from the band performing live in concert over the years at concert halls, arenas, and stadiums--Toto's most successful venue. Numbers include: "Rosanna," "Africa," "I Won't Hold You Back," "English Eyes," "Afraid to Love," "I'll Be Over You," "Little Wing," and more.
| | Marillion Happiness Is The Road: Essence Vol. 1 CD (2008)
Christmas
$10.05 Marillion's 15th album is actually double album split into two separate CDs. 'Happiness is the Road Volume One' is subtitled 'Essence' and contains all new material from one of the most loved and passionate bands in the world. A new creative streak of writing and producing music was captured in the studio and fans will not be disappointed. Pushing the boundaries of what a 'typical' Marillion CD is supposed to sound like as well as keeping the magic that makes them Marillion. Amazing. Volume Two of 'Happiness is the Road', 'The Hard Shoulder,' will be released on the same day as well!
Marillion: Steve Hogarth (vocals, piano, kurzweil, glockenspiel, percussion, background vocals); Steve Rothery (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, baritone guitar, background vocals); Pete Trewavas (electric guitar, bass guitar, background vocals); Mark Kelly (piano, harmonium, keyboards, background vocals); Ian Mosley (drum, background vocals). Personnel: Michael Hunter (recorder). Additional personnel: S. Audley (dulcimer); S. Claydon (arco bass); Dawn Roberts (finger cymbals); Jon Hotten (tambourine); P. Bisset (percussion); Emil H. Audio Mixer: Michael Hunter. The band that ushered in the British neo-prog wave in the 1980s, Marillion has proved itself to be a true survivor. Still going strong in 2008, the band is as ambitious as ever, releasing their latest batch of tunes, HAPPINESS IS THE ROAD, as two separate volumes. Where its sister album, THE HARD SHOULDER, is a more visceral, rocking effort, the first volume, ESSENCE, is a lush, atmospheric affair, somewhat reminiscent of latter-day (post-Roger Waters) Pink Floyd, but with a more contemporary flavor that neatly dodges retro cliches. Once upon a time, Marillion was unmistakably a prog pop band. But by the dawn of the 21st century, it was becoming increasingly clearer that the group was shedding their early prog direction in favor of melodic pop (akin to Radiohead's more focused and mainstream moments, or eve

| | Lee Ranaldo Amarillo Ramp (For Robert Smithson) CD (1998)
Christmas
$37.25 The Amarillo Ramp is an enormous land sculpture created in 1973 by the artist Robert Smithson just outside the small panhandle city of Amarillo, TX. Pictured on the front of Lee Ranaldo's fifth solo album, the Amarillo Ramp is a circular elevation that slowly builds from ground level to a sort of peak. It's a lovely thing, as is Ranaldo's half-hour instrumental of the same title, which builds on a similar structure, gradually moving from absolute stillness to a slowly-building climax, as Ranaldo loops short guitar phrases and layers them atop one another. Bearing a surprising resemblance to Philip Glass' earliest works (although the actual recording process is much closer to Robert Fripp's Frippertronics methods), "Amarillo Ramp" is one of Ranaldo's most impressive achievements. The other four pieces sound rather like leftovers in comparison, but they're not without merit. "Non-Site #3" is a fractious jam with fellow Sonic Youth folks Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, while the acoustic instrumental "Here" sounds very much like Ranaldo's acknowledged hero John Fahey. The two vocal pieces, "Notebook" and a faithful but unilluminating cover of John Lennon's "Isolation," are less essential, but, overall, this is a terrific and adventurous album for experimental rock fans. ~ Stewart Mason
