Those who might have pegged quintessential R&B balladeer Toni Braxton as a monochromatic artist in the past will be taken up short by the variety of sonic colors on offer throughout MORE THAN A WOMAN. The moody, mid-tempo "Give it Back" boasts a bit of hip-hop flavor by virtue of a contribution from the Big Tymers. Loon lends a rap to "Hit the Freeway" as well, but the tune is set apart by its strikingly funky, urgent production. "Me and My Boyfriend" boasts some Spanish guitar amid its slinky grooves.
All this eclecticism aside, it's obviously the ballad form in which Braxton excels, and she certainly gets a chance to strut her stuff here in that regard. However, even on these cuts, the production--incorporating everything from odd, strident electronic effects to distorted rock guitar--is so consistently inventive that there's no possibility of coming off with anything like a generic tune.

Best albums out there! This CD was by far the BEST cd I've heard in a long time. I bought this CD by accident. I wasn't a fan of Toni's at all, but now that I've heard this CD I'm her biggest supporters. I will always buy her music from now on. Watch out Ashanti's, Beyonce, JLo. and that girl who can't sing on the Roccafella label. Go back to singing lessons and take it from a real DIVA like Toni Braxton! "Rock me, roll me" This Cd had absolutely no promotion whatsoever, period as compared to "The heat". Which is a very good reason she left Laface. The album was pretty damn good despite fickle fans who weren't really fans to begin with. The Highlight song "rock me, roll me" is burning hot and "let me show you(the way out)"an anthem for breaking up with a scrub is bumpin'. She really put a lot of rap on this Cd and I know It's culture clash but she succeeded gracefully. Luv Ya' toni***. Submitted by virtue1boy (Houston, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
