THE GENIUS OF THE ELECTRIC GUITAR features recordings Charlie Christian made with the Benny Goodman Sextet and Orchestra, plus small studio groups recordings from 1939-1941.
Recorded between 1939 & 1941. Includes liner notes by Les Paul, Peter BRoadbent and Loren Schoenberg.
THE GENIUS OF THE ELECTRIC GUITAR was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Historical Album.
Charlie Christian's complete recorded output was limited to a large handful of studio sides cut with the Benny Goodman Sextet, some air checks and studio outtakes, the 1938 Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall and a few live tapes made at Minton's (Harlem's legendary after-hours cradle of bebop). As often happens in such cases, this small amount of material has been repackaged every which way, making it hard to know where to start. Start here. Columbia's Jazz Masterpieces recordings feature digital remastering, a generous number of cuts, full documentation of sidemen and recording dates and interesting liner notes (not to mention cool hand-colored photography).
GENIUS OF THE ELECTRIC GUITAR features such essential repertoire as "Seven Come Eleven," "Breakfast Feud," "Air Mail Special," and Christian's one feature with the full Goodman big band, "Solo Flight" (known elsewhere as "Chonk, Charlie, Chonk"). Goodman always hired stellar personnel; during Charlie's all-too-short tenure (from 1939 to his death from tuberculosis at age 22 in 1941), the Sextet also included, for a few of these recordings, Count Basie on piano.
Includes liner notes by Chris Albertson.
Digitally remastered by Tim Geelan (CBS Studio, New York).
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great Music, Terrible Packaging This is the best-sounding compilation of Charlie Christian's work with the Benny Goodman Sextet ever released. The four discs are arranged so that the master takes are at the start of the disc and the alternate takes for the sessions follow. That way, only those jazzheads who really want to sit through four consecutive takes of "Breakfast Feud" need do so. There are scads of alternate takes here and the jam sessions from which "Blues in B" and "Waitin' for Benny" were taken in the early LP era is released in its 21-minute entirety. The liner note booklet is first-class and seems to be free from the errors that have haunted a lot of CD reissues from Sony.
However, the packaging is terrible. The discs are stored upright in slots cut in a piece of foam rubber with no other protection! You thus run the risk of scratching them when you put the top back on the box, or simply in getting them in and out. What were they thinking of? Great music, very very bright remastering This is wonderful music. One of the very best possible collections of the music of Charlie Christian, who was a pioneer of the jazz guitar and a consummate musician. The only way this could be improved as a collection would really to include another five cds that would complete his known recordings!
A nice informative booklet even if prone to odd type and background color couplings; a failing of many Columbia box set booklets. . .a change of art director wouldn't upset me!
The remastering I feel very ambivalent about. The set is painstakingly remastered to show all the detail that exists on the original source recordings. BUT it is painfully bright; clarinet and vibes just sizzle on my system and make this not a relaxing listen. I would appreciate a more natural, neutral tonal balance. GREAT Music, AWFUL packaging Firstly, this is the best sounding BG Sextet recordings of Christian you will hear. Absolutely well done remastering, except for the jam session which was terribly worn in the first minute or so. But the one that baffles me is the packaging. Yes, it's nice to have a replica of Christian's amp, but when you reach for the box, the bottom falls out and the disks are held upright with foam! What genius thought this up?? It's the worst packaging I've ever seen in my years of collecting. One can't help but wonder if the foam will crumble with age? But, packing aside, the liner notes are GREAT and the music is jazz at it's best. Must have for Benny or Christian collectors. Submitted by brianphoto (Manteca, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
