There are dozens of Leadbelly compilations available, but THE LEGENDARY MASTERS SERIES stands out. Where most anthologies focus, almost by necessity, on one period of Leadbelly's prolific career or one aspect of his multifaceted musical style, the 16-track LEGENDARY MASTER SERIES attempts, and largely succeeds, to provide a general introduction to Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter for novices.
Beginning with his earliest commercial recordings, in 1935, and continuing through his career until his death in 1949, the songs on THE LEGENDARY MASTERS SERIES cover every aspect of Leadbelly's unique musical vision, from acoustic Delta blues, to traditional folk, to cowboy songs, to gospel, to jazz, and to pop influences. Though his best-known songs, "Goodnight Irene" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," are absent, what's here, from the classic "Midnight Special" to the odd "Pigmeat," are essential. Novices looking for a basic introduction to this legendary singer/guitarist need look no further. Legendary Masters Series Music Legendary Masters Series Music Legendary Masters Series Review

Legendary Masters Series album
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. A sterling cast of players backs Cale, adding warm tones and light, in-the-cut rhythms. NATURALLY is a perfect ...

| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Legendary Masters Series music CDs
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance ...
| | Ruthie Foster Phenomenal CD (2007)
Legendary Masters Series songs
$12.19 Ruthie Foster's fifth CD features the singer moving away from her usual genre of modern folk music into soul. While she performs selections by Son House and Sister Rosetta Tharpe and there are bluesy performances, most of the numbers are of more recent vintage. Her powerful voice, which infuses secular music with the power and emotions of gospel, is heard throughout in prime form and she makes ...

| | Joe Turner Between Two Seconds CD (2004)
Legendary Masters Series CD music
$13.85 Ex-Abunai! drummer Joe Turner's first solo move was discreet: a self-released CD-Rom EP entitled Dollar Star. Between Two Seconds contains the seven songs released on that EP, plus four more, and constitutes his official full-length solo debut. The album requires some getting used to. It's not that it is difficult (far from it, actually) or poorly recorded (on the contrary, impressive production), but Turner's songs tend to remain in the background on first listen. Only after a few listens does Between Two Seconds open up its thick arrangements to let you in. The melodies and lyrics are often slightly too "psychedelic pop/rock" generic to make a strong impression, but what saves the album and empowers it with a good replay value are the consistency of the songwriting (not a single bad track) and the richness of the arrangements. A multi-instrumentalist himself, Turner also brought a number of friends into the studio, including ex-Olivia Tremor Control Bill Doss, ex-Abunai! guitarist Brendan Quinn and flutist Ajda Snyder aka the Turkish Queen.) If these fine musicians add specific touches to specific songs, what reigns on this album is Turner's resourcefulness in the studio: from mic'ing techniques for the drums to vocal effects, from guitar pedals to synth patches; each song offers a new sound palette and every listen brings forth a different shade, like a guitar track previously gone unnoticed. ...
