One of the most pop-oriented U.K. bands to be associated with the shoegazer movement, the Boo Radleys had largely broken from the style's feedback-heavy sound by the time of 1995's WAKE UP! Clearly taking the playfulness and eclecticism of the late-'60s Beatles to heart, the group, masterminded by guitarist Martin Carr, crafted a bright, dynamic album that kicks off with the charmingly sleepy intro to "Wake Up Boo!"--a track that eventually breaks into a vibrant, horn-led melody. The Radleys' penchant for boisterous fanfare also pops up on the giddy "It's Lulu," while the ensemble's more subdued side is showcased on the gentle, jangly "Fairfax Scene." And although Carr and company generally disliked being lumped in with the Britpop scene, the mini-epic "Joel" features a distinctively Stone Roses-like section, one of many moments that tied the band to the thriving movement. While the Radleys' previous outing, GIANT STEPS, may have been more challenging and innovative, WAKE UP! is the group's kaleidoscopic crowning achievement.
The third album for the English guitar pop act, originally released in 1995.

| | Fall Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 CDs (2005) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Wake Up! songs
$39.39 Work was well underway on The Complete Peel Sessions when the legendary John Peel passed away, so there's some comfort in the thought that the Fall's greatest cheerleader probably got to see and hear some kind of prototype of this incredible box set. He often referred to the band as "the mighty Fall": this box set is the evidence. Collecting all 24 sessions that the edgy, unclassifiable group did for Peel's radio program, this six-CD set is overwhelming and probably too much to digest for newcomers. Listeners who have already absorbed the excellent overview 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong, picked up an album or two, and are up for a challenge should put this set near the top of their list because these sessions usually ran four songs long, forcing the often-wandering and sprawling Fall to cut to the chase if they wanted to make an impact. Despite Mark E. Smith's flippant attitude toward practically everything, the 24 sessions here all display a need to make that impact with an urgency and drive that's woefully absent from all but the band's best albums. Highlights are too numerous to list, and this puts the set next to 50,000 Fall Fans and This Nation's Saving Grace in the Fall "Hall of Fame." Adding to the box set's desirability -- and making it much easier to digest in small bites -- is the distinct, separative ...

| | Canned Heat Live In Concert: Woodstock CD (2008)
Wake Up! album
$9.69 There have easily been half-a-dozen releases derived from this late-'70s reunion of the venerable psychedelic/blues band Canned Heat. Setting this package apart from King Biscuit Flower Hour's Greatest Hits Live or the DTS 5.1 DVD version From the Front Row Live (2003) is the inclusion of two "bonus" tracks -- which will be expounded upon momentarily. The specific performance featured within the main program is rare in the sense that it is one of the only available to boast a short-lived lineup lead by Canned Heat veterans Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass/vocals), Bob "The Bear" Hite (harmonica/vocals), and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums), with Mike "Hollywood Fats" Mann (guitar) and Jay Spell (piano). The band's September 7, 1979 set was part of a larger celebration held in Brookhaven, NY and marking the tenth anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair. Suitably, the combo churns through a handful of the better-known selections that have become synonymous with their initial fame as boogie-based rockers during the late '60s. Primary among them are "On the Road Again" and the back to nature anthem "Goin' Up the Country" -- the latter having been used prominently in the Woodstock (1970) motion picture documentary and subsequent soundtrack. As such, each is met with enthusiastic responses from the gathered masses. Slightly deeper into their decade-old repertoire are sturdy updates of Amos Milburn's Crescent City soul classic "Chicken Shack Boogie" as well as William Harris' "Bullfrog Blues." The lengthy workout on "Human Conditions" -- the title track to their most recent long player -- is recommended listening for inclined parties, as is the hard-driving closer "Shake 'n' Boogie" as the band turn up the fire into a full-blown revival of the incendiary style that garnered their initial notoriety. The aforementioned supplementary sides are the incongruous additions of "Let's Work Together" and the seasonal offering "Christmas Blues." Although they are both worth having, neither seems to have a specific connection to the 1979 concert. ~ Lindsay Planer
This is one of the only titles, if not the only title, with this particular incarnation of the traditional blues-influenced Canned Heat. The Heat are primarily remembered for having been at both the Monterey International Pop Music Festival (June 1967) and the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair ...
| | Seamus Gavin-Preceilidh Session Etiquette CD (2008)
Wake Up! CD music
$14.79 Preceilidh is a cooperative movement with 4 musicians at its core, namely Miriam Ringshall, Dominic Henderson, James Gavin and myself. It had it genesis in the hard-core bars of North London. We take pleasure in whipping the crowd into frenzy. We hope we captured a little of that flare in our recordings. If not turn up to a session.Session Etiquette sets out to show the purists how music can evolve and should be played. Within these 9 tracks we have sought to progress from the traditional to the unconventional. We broke rules and a few strings in the process. We hope you enjoy it.1. 4 jig reel - is a contradiction in terms. It breaks several rules, for those who know, or live by them. 2. Rambling Irishman – I first heard Dick Gaughan singing this song. He does it justice. I hope we do too.3. Silver Spear – talk about breaking rules, we smashed them with this version of this beautiful tune. We first heard the legendary Horslips playing it on the Táin.4. The Seven Gypsies – this song has been with us since our conception. It stirs the crowd whenever we perform ...
