MCDONALD AND GILES is a 1970 reissue that features former King Crimson members Ian McDonald - who went on to join Foreigner - and Michael Giles and includes "Suite In C," "Flight Of The Ibis," and "Is She Waiting?" Following the meltdown of the original King Crimson lineup, Ian McDonald and Michael Giles brought brother Peter Giles back, which helps to account, in some ways, for the resemblance of this album to the 1968 Giles, Giles & Fripp recordings -- though the songs here tend to go on at some length, combining prog rock's traits of length and multiple sections with some of the lighter feel of the GG&F days. The 20 minute "Birdman" tends towards self-indulgence, while "People of Tomorrow (The Children of Today)" loses focus halfway and spends the next four minutes being a blithering -- if pretty -- musical idiot. The main attraction is really the performances turned in by McDonald and the Giles brothers -- they all sound fabulous, even when waffling musically, while Michael Giles has a unique drum tone that never has been duplicated (Giles himself abandoned the sound for his later career in Jackson Heights and as a session drummer). Peter Giles returned to the accounting trade, alas, while Ian McDonald eventually wound up as part of Foreigner, which is another tale entirely. ~ Steven McDonald
Former King Crimson members Ian McDonald & Michael Giles recorded this set shortly after leaving the British prog-rock group in 1969. They enlisted the help of Traffic vocalist / keyboardist Steve Winwood and released this album in 1970. Songs like 'Flight of the Ibis' & 'Is She Waiting' were standard pop fare of the time, but "Birdman" was the obligatory album side long track that is the set's focal point. Allegedly, Robert Fripp wanted the song for King Crimson's "In The Wake Of Poseidon" and paid homage to the track on his first solo album "Exposure". McDonald in later years co-founded Foreigner and Giles went on to become a session player. Their moment in time still stands as a favorite of prog rockers worldwide. | Mcdonald & Giles Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Very good music from the early '70. I had this album (vinyl) since 1973. Great to have it now as a CD (no more scratching sound of a worn vinyl!).
Great pleasure to listen this beautiful album. These two guys were formely members of King Crimson on the first album (In the court of the Crimson King) and Giles was alson on the second album (In the wake of Poseidon).
Great music, genius!

a forgotten, overlooked and underrated masterpiece I think this is a incredible record. Robert Fripp said a long time ago that half Mcdonald and Giles record and half ITWOP would be the second KC record and perhaps he was right.
Its structure is the follow one: four pieces one side one and one piece on the side two. That structured appears on KCīs Lizard record because RF wanted to have Mcdonald model. Both records are great ones.
It contains great music but it couldnīt be played live.
Itīs a very special record for me for very personal reasons. Itīs a great progressive rock masterpiece. Enjoy it. Submitted by Jacob (La Coruņa, La Coruņa, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Classic This sounds like a follow-up to King Crimson's debut. Much better than their actual follow-up, and for that matter, anything Crimson did prior to Bruford and Wetton joining. It's hard to believe that without Greg Lake's majestic and powerful voice, and without Fripp's mind-bending playing, these two former members could have much to offer, yet here it is. Obviously the original King Crimson wasn't all Fripp's doing. This album is so good it seems unfair to cast it in the shadow of KC. Anybody that is a fan of the first KC and early progrock should definitely add this one to their collection. Submitted by david (massachusetts) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"Sheer musicality!" Hi there!
Recorded during the summer of 1970 after Ian McDonald and Michael Giles had left King Crimson in December 1969.
This album 'IS' a masterpiece, but with one minor flaw... no Mellotron! It easily matches up to King Crimson's debut 'In the Court of the Crimson King'. In many ways it's just as innovative and stunning, but in a much more subtle way. Robert Fripp say's that Ian's contribution to King Crimson was "Sheer musicality!", this album lets us hear just what he means, along with the excellent vocals and drum's/percussion of Michael Giles this all amount's to a wonderful album.
Go buy it now!!

Worth checking out This is a pretty decent album, but definitely not the "masterpiece" that some people make it out to be. The material and production sound a bit dated, but the playing is very good (especially Giles' drumming). Either way, it's worth checking out if you are a serious Crimson fan. Mcdonald & Giles
$13.79 Initial pressings of ONE SOUL NOW contained a bonus disc featuring cover songs. Cowboy Junkies: Alan Anton (bass instrument); Margo Timmins, Michael Timmins, Peter Timmins. Personnel: Margo Timmins (vocals); Michael Timmins (guitar); Jaro Czerwinec (accordion); Jeff Bird (melodica, percussion); Linford Detweiler (organ); Peter Timmins (drums). Audio Mixer: Jeff Wolpert. Recording information: Chemical Sound (2003); The Clubhouse (2003). While it seems more common in the '80s, '90s, and beyond for a good band to remain intact for ten-plus years, they all face the same challenge: how does one continue to keep the music fresh and remain relevant? The Cowboy Junkies faced an uphill battle from the get-go, always living in the shadow of The Trinity Session (1988), and moving from the mainstream (including major labels, radio play, and a gig on Saturday Night Live) to just under the radar. Despite these changes, the Junkies have still been able to make great albums, like 1992's Black Eyed Man and 2001's Open. Both of these albums also showed a band willing to delve into new sounds (country and classic rock, respectively) and come up winners. One Soul Now seems to pick up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse. The title cut opens with acoustic guitar before transforming into a sleepy rocker that manages to be seductive and sinister at the same time. Margo Timmins' vocals are hypnotically lovely as usual, merging with bluesy guitar riffs and emerging above the morass as the chorus kicks in. Here, and on the following cut, "Why This One," it's easy to believe that the Junkies are going to pull off another coup. The arrangements and production of both cuts seem to bring a perfect balance to these songs, and the execution is handled with confidence. On second listen, however, Michael Timmins' songs tend to float more than move, and by the time the listener reaches the third cut, "My Wild Child," a familiar complaint against the Junkies emerges: the songs begin to fade into one another, more somnolent than hypnotic. Perhaps that's why a number of the later cuts choose different approaches by adding everything from organ to accordion to handclaps. Unfortunately, ...
| | Innocence Mission Birds Of My Neighborhood CD (1999) Reissue
Mcdonald & Giles
$9.49 THE INNOCENCE MISSION HAS NEVER been concerned with image or posturing but has chosen instead to concentrate solely on their music. This is more evident than ever on the group's release, Birds Of My Neighborhood. The departure of drummer Steve Brown and the decision not to replace him has meant that the group's backbone and sound coloring now come from the acoustic guitars of Karen and Don Peris. Their recording is so sparse and intimate that it sounds like a group of friends playing in a living room, and this approach perfectly frames the wistful sentiments expressed in the songs. The Innocence Mission was formed by Karen ...
