Tony Morley's fascination with the obtuse has carved out an enviable reputation for his London-based Leaf label. "Hana" opens the album, the disfigured call and response between cut-up spoken word and Asa-Chang's drunken clacks of percussion comparable to a Lynch-esque car crash, with a hair-raising blend of emotive string rises left to rein in the chaotic drum works. This first track pretty much summates an album which collates the band's recordings for the Hot Cha and Trattoria imprints, all recorded in the spirit of kidoairaku, a Japanese word encapsulating the full emotive spectrum of humanity, where thunderclaps are as likely as psychotic beats or simple jazz-folk compositions. A difficult, through ultimately rewarding, listen. ~ Kingsley Marshall

The Wire (7/02, p.55) - "...The Junray sound is at once tranquil and agitated, anarchic and controlled, melodic yet fractured....Asa-Chang manages to pull off a feeling of extreme dislocation..." Jun Ray Sung Chang album
$13.25 This is the debut solo album by Lau Naukkarinen (aka Lau Nau), a young alternative folk singer active on the Finnish abstract folk scene and sharing affinities with the likes of Fürsaxa and the Iditarod. She sings in her native tongue, in a very quiet, unassuming voice that has a certain charm but falls under the generic heading of the genre. Kuutarha contains ten short songs (only one of them crosses the five-minute mark), for a total duration of 41 minutes. Its main point of interest resides in the wide array of instruments used, especially the profusion of guitars and string instruments, from sitar to violin, by way of droning electric guitars. Various flutes are also heard throughout. Nau multi-tracks her voice in some pieces, at times strongly evoking some of Linda Perhacs' songs, ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Jun Ray Sung Chang CD music
$12.09 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, ...

| | Joanna Newsom Ys CD (2006)
Jun Ray Sung Chang CD music
$12.69 It shouldn't be a surprise that an artist as stridently unconventional as Joanna Newsom would make a second album that overturns all the expectations established by her first. While Newsom's harp, highly poetic lyrics, and distinctive, child-like voice will be familiar to fans of THE MILK-EYED MENDER, YS takes Newsom's art in ...

Jun Ray Sung Chang songs
$22.35 PRIMO is the 1991 release from famed rock group Dr. Feelgood.
Primo broke one of the longest silences in the Feelgood's recorded career so far -- almost four years had elapsed since Classic, during which time their back catalog had kept their name alive, while touring ensured the edge remained sharp. It wasn't much of a respite then, but it apparently did the band good. Across a clutch of new Will Birch songs, and a succession of deftly selected and executed covers, Primo was indeed primo Feelgoods, from the blistered take on Mickey Jupp's "Standing at the Crossroads Again" to a totally unexpected revision of the Doors' "Been Down So Long." Even the departure, midway through ...
| | Glasspack Powderkeg CD (2002)
Jun Ray Sung Chang album
$11.99 As the Glasspack's second LP, 2002's Powderkeg, checks in, the band is already heard in full flight, crushing through a cacophony of instrumentation that would suggest the ending rave-up for their earlier Road Warriors EP. Once they crash to a stop a few seconds in, the rhythm guitar of singer Dirty Dave Johnson is the first thing that hits you, as it lays down a resounding, rumbling foundation over which lead guitarist Lil' Bucky and the rest of the Glasspack crew can do their thang -- that being a high-octane blend of stoner rock grinds and retro-rock grooves piled high with glorious distortion. Johnson's vocals -- hoarse and strangulated -- are another matter, but what the Glasspack lack in melodic finesse they more than make up for in terms of exuberantly raw instrumental excitement. The first truly choice example of their abilities arrives three songs in, when the sardonic "Mrs. Satan" introduces both the ...
