| | Gene Autry Christmas CD Gene Autry Discography of CDs
Following on from an excellent Gene Autry Christmas collection on Columbia from ten years earlier, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Other Christmas Classics adds two tracks to that disc's 16 and furnishes a remastering that makes these tracks sound better than ever. Though Autry's known best in a holiday context for the title song, he recorded many more splendid songs during the period, all of them evincing his superb Hollywood swing. Autry's other additions to the repertoire of Christmas classics landed in 1950 ("Frosty the Snowman," then a new song) and 1952 ("The Night Before Christmas Song"). Since country & western audiences were notoriously sensitive, he stayed away from sacred classics, making this collection much more exciting and fun than the usual. Aside from the above, highlights include "He's a Chubby Little Fellow," "Here Comes Santa Claus," and his update of an earlier hit, "The Night Before Christmas (In Texas, That Is)." ~ John Bush
Released by Columbia/Legacy in 1994, A Gene Autry Christmas is an excellent overview of his holiday recordings for Columbia, featuring no less than 16 songs, including his classic "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "If it Doesn't Snow on Christmas Day," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Everyone's a Child at Christmas." Autry's recordings were almost always charming, and that quality was in ample display on his holiday albums. This disc does a terrific job of rounding up highlights from those many records; until the release in 2003 of a remastered collection (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Other Christmas Classics), A Gene Autry Christmas was the definitive Autry Christmas collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Recorded between 1947 and 1956.
Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch.

Gene Autry Christmas album
$5.75 The Christmas Album finds the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band turning in a typically tasteful album and a surprisingly strong country holiday record. Along with a couple recent holiday tunes and originals, the Dirt Band puts their distinctive spin on traditional carols like "Silver Bells," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy." The end result is quite charming and should appeal to much of the Dirt Band's hardcore following. ~ Thom Owens

| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
Gene Autry Christmas CD music
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie), "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as well as holiday favorites like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (which is featured in a medley here). His ...
