Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Director's Comments; Behind The Scenes An American boxer retires to his native Ireland where he tames the town bully and a strong-willed woman. One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale. Shot in Technicolor.
Additional cast members: Eileen Crowe (Mrs. Playfair), May Craig (Woman), Charles Fitzsimmons (Forbes), Sean McGlory (Owen Glynn), Joseph O'Dea (Guard), Kevin Lawless (Fireman), Paddy O'Donnell (Porter) and Web Overlander (Station Master).
Francis Cugat was the Technicolor consultant. Quiet Man Quotes/Excerpts: "Impetuous -- Homeric" Barry Fitzgerald (Michaeleen Oge Flynn) after seeing the broken bridal bed in the Thornton home.
"Here's a stick to beat the lovely lady." May Craig (village woman) as Sean Thornton drags his bride Mary Kate home. Quiet Man Reviews: "...Gorgeous cinematography..."

-- Damien Love, Uncut Quiet Man Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Excellent Movie I am not normally a fan of this type of movie, but the story line and views of old Ireland and people was great. The quality of the DVD was also good. Better than the yearly TV version since it had not interruption. The DVD adders were also well worth watching. "A Classic" I first saw "The Quiet Man" when it was made in 1952, and haven't missed it every year since then.
The scenery is beautiful, there couldn't be a better cast, It has an excellant story, and the music is outstanding.
This is definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen. I would recomend it to anyone.

Terrible DVD The movie a classic, one of the best of the best. However, the transfer on this DVD is very bad. This is the second attempt and the Collectors Addition is a flop. I bought this very same edition at a mall store and it too is very bad. The vidio is not clear. The VHS I have of this movie is far better in every way. How sad.

$7.09 John Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the ...

$7.05 The hilarious DONOVAN'S REEF, one of John Ford's rare but memorable forays into comedy, is set on the South Sea island of Haleakoloha, where two navy buddies have decided to stay after World War II. Michael "Guns" Donovan (John Wayne) and Aloysius "Boats" Gilhooley (Lee Marvin), who like to celebrate their mutual birthday every year by trying to beat the hell out of each other, are enacting the ritual in Guns's bar, Donovan's Reef. Dr. William Dedham (Jack Warden), scion of a wealthy family and another societal dropout, breaks up the fight after an appropriate amount of damage has been done. He soon learns that his very proper daughter, Amelia (Elizabeth Allen), is about to arrive from Boston, unaware that he's had three children by a Polynesian princess. Dedham persuades Guns to pretend to be the father of his kids during the visit in order to be spared Amelia's wrath. While Dedham's daughter is initially put off by the juvenile antics of Donovan's crew, the tavern owner's feelings toward her are far more positive. After she beats him in a swimming competition, she begins to see his appeal. Filmed in Kauai, Hawaii, this entertaining family-oriented comedy is stoked with broad physical gags and the inspired tomfoolery of the cast. The most notable performance belongs to Wayne, who ends his long, hugely successful, and ...

Quiet Man review
$12.99 Combining unabashed gore with political commentary and social satire reminiscent of George Romero, South African director Kenneth Kaplan's debut is an award-winning horror film that deconstructs the absurdity of apartheid through dark humor. Fanus (Carl Beukes) is a white rookie cop working a beat in a surreal industrial town. His older half-brother (Danny Keogh) has just returned home after a long absence, taking up a relationship with his mother Gertrude (Aletta Bezuidenhout) that is as dark as it is incestuous; the two begin plotting a way to resurrect Fanus' deceased father, who was an evil general in the apartheid regime. Little does the hapless rookie cop know, however, that his is the last South African blood of a purely Aryan descent, and thus it is required to carry out his relatives' ...
