THE STRANGER: Orson Welles directed and starred in THE STRANGER, a tense black-and-white thriller that Welles made for maverick producer Sam Spiegel. Welles portrays Charles Rankin, a respected academic at a prominent Connecticut college. He seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful new wife, Mary (Loretta Young); and a charming home in a small town that holds him in high esteem. Enter Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson), a detective on the hunt for Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler. The appearance of Mr. Wilson threatens to reveal that underneath this idyllic veneer is a secret that could tear everything apart.
Although many of Welles's most interesting scenes wound up on the cutting-room floor when Spiegel reedited the film, THE STRANGER is still multilayered, complex, and fascinating. The scenes between Welles and Robinson are intellectually gripping, leading up to the stylized, shocking conclusion. As with so many of Welles's films, he was unhappy with the final result, but the viewer won't be. It would be most interesting to see the film as Welles intended it to be, but in the meantime, this version of THE STRANGER is a marvel. Theatrical Release: July, 1946
An uncredited John Huston had a large hand in the development of the script.
The producers, led by Sam Spiegel, cut many of Welles's favorite, more complex scenes. Welles was never happy with the final cut.
THE STRANGER was the first Hollywood film to use real footage from World War II concentration camps.
Welles originally wanted Agnes Moorehead to play the character eventually played by Edward G. Robinson.
THE STRANGER was the only Welles-directed film to show a profit upon its initial theatrical release.
THE STRANGER is perhaps the most mainstream of Welles's films; he shot it within the studio system, shooting it by the book.

Edward G in pursuit, Orson Welles pursued, Lorette Young blinded by love. A tidy little film, plausible diaslogue and situations.

Apart from the never-relenting tension and continuous suspense this movie is memorable for the high class dramatic performance of the 2 leading characters
the great Edward G. Robinson, and the genius Orson Welles. Highly recommended!

Holds Your Attention From Beginning to End
This film is quite a gem. It holds your attention from beginning to end. It clearly was not a big budget venture, but it uses economy to great advantage. The movie unfolds neatly and swiftly. The script is top notch. The camera work almost flawless. If you love suspense, if you love Orson Welles as an actor or as a director, if you liked Edward G. Robinson in Double Indemnity, if you think Loretta Young is beautiful, or if you just want to see a good yarn, get this film...

Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard's comic timing is excellent, and the works on which they are teamed together contain some of the funniest moments filmed by either actor. Hope plays Larry Lawrence, a New York City detective who becomes involved in a gangster-related hotel shoot-out. Believing he has killed a man, Lawrence hides in a trunk owned by Mary Carter (Goddard). When Lawrence gets out of the trunk, he finds himself on a steamboat, as Carter is en route to a castle which she has recently inherited on a small island off the coast of Cuba. While aboard the ship, Carter and Lawrence are aprised of rumors that the castle is haunted, but they remains steadfast in their will to visit it. Once there, many perilous and hilarious adventures await. THE GHOST BREAKERS is widely heralded as the best of Hope and Goddard's combined efforts.

In 1960, accountant Richard Wayman and photographer Phyllis Vaughn started the Cleveland-based Highway Safety Foundation after amassing a sizeable collection of photos taken at auto crash sites and shooting an educational film, SIGNAL 30, which incorporated crash site footage. The Foundation's film production wing, Safety Enterprises, went on to produce a number of now-legendary auto safety films (including WHEELS OF TRAGEDY and MECHANIZED DEATH) incorporating extremely grisly real-life imagery, which were shown to unsuspecting high school students across the United States in the 1960s and 70s. Bret Miller's documentary takes a probing look into the strange story of the people who made these bizarre and haunting films. He includes interviews with genre experts such as educational film archivist Richard Prelinger and Something Weird Video's Mike Vraney, as well as Earle Deems and John Domer--two of the men who worked on these compelling curiosities. While the subject matter is sensationalistic by nature, Miller's approach is reverent, and, though the films have passed on into the land of pop cultural legend, one is never doubtful that those who made the films did so out of a well-intentioned sense of duty and purpose.
