| | Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Ache! CD Bobby Sanabria Discography of CDs
New York City-based drummer Bobby Sanabria might be considered the Buddy Rich of the Latin jazz percussive arena. He's a firebrand who lays down fervent swing grooves while churning out blazingly fast and amazingly coherent salsa beats amid an altogether complex attack. With this 2002 effort, the drummer leads his quartet through a sequence of torridly executed bop numbers and soul-stirring ballads via his polyrhythmic flurries and penchant for nuance. Saxophonist Jay Collins launches the proceedings with grit and determination on Dizzy Gillespie's bop classic "Shaw 'Nuff." Here and throughout, the band commingles inherent elements of clave with crisply executed time signatures and ferocious exchanges. Even when they explore balladry, the soloists seem more inclined to go for the gusto in lieu of settling for lush romanticism or saccharine statements. It all pans out rather nicely, as this release was among the finest Latin jazz recordings of 2002. ~ Glenn Astarita
Led by the renowned Nuyorican master drummer Bobby Sanabria, the powerhouse Quarteto Ache roars its way through two Dizzy Gillespie classics and seven exciting band originals which form a true compendium of Latin jazz musical styles and rhythms of the la

A LOVE SUPREME is the essential example of the genius of John Coltrane. In what has become the apotheosis of jazz music, this eminently accessible work bridges the gap between music and spirituality, between art and life. With the ultimate incarnation of the jazz quartet, Coltrane brings together all of his turbulent elements into a cohesive paean to spirituality, one which is fully appreciable by the uninitiated.
A LOVE SUPREME is a 33-minute work divided into four movements. "Acknowledgment" starts the album with a heraldic summoning from Coltrane's tenor saxophone, full and joyous, which approximates the tone of the prayer he provides in the album's liner notes. The solo that follows reveals an artist whose spiritual depth and emotional urgency are matched by an adherence ...
| | Ray Barretto Homage To Art Blakey CD (2003)
Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Ache!
$13.85 Where does one go from the top? Ray Barretto through his years collaborating with the most important names in jazz and giving some of salsa's most notable musicians their start has become the most notable conguero around. No one has done so much for the role of the instrument, either by way of notoriety or for its musical role. Where does one go from being the most notable living conguero? In Barretto's case, the answer is that, like a true master, you pay tribute to the masters who went before you. In his 2003 Homage to Art (Blakey & the Jazz Messengers) Barretto looks back on some of his favorite compositions from his days as a fellow percussionist/bandleader. It is becoming a well-worn path to cover material from our jazz forefathers thanks to artists like Conrad Herwig, Brian Lynch and others, who've done a fine job reworking classic material to swing en clave, but the opportunity to hear it done by one of Latin jazz's genuine pioneers is rare and precious. With a lineup of ...
