| | Julie Miller Broken Things CD (1999)
Tibetan Singing Bowls music CDs
$10.89 Julie Miller is a rarity among singer-songwriters. Her songs are eminently cover-able and have widely been afforded such treatment. But they are also so personal that they seem to be rolling out of her heart when she sings them. BROKEN THINGS is the follow-up to BLUE PONY, Miller's stunning 1997 debut. Guests include Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, and NRBQ's Joey Spampinato. The album was produced by Julie and her husband Buddy Miller (whose own CRUEL MOON was released nearly simultaneously).
As a singer, Miller can embrace a spiritual realm rich with introspection ("I Know Why the River Runs"). She can also kick things up with a sassy edge, as she does here on "I Need You." The set's one cover is a version of the traditional ballad "Two Soldiers." The narrow programming of radio in the '90s is no barometer of the important music being produced. Like Earle and Harris, Julie Miller simply makes good music. This is a stellar release.
Recorded between February & May 1999.
Personnel: Julie Miller (guitar, acoustic guitar); Buddy Miller (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, violin, melodica, harmonium); Steve Earle (vocals, mandolin); Teresa Williams, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Victoria Williams (vocals); Larry Campbell (acoustic guitar, bouzouki, mandolin); Ed Foote (hurdy-gurdy); John Catchings (cello); John Schreiner (accordion, piano); Phil Madeira (accordion, harmonium, organ); Rev. Brady Blade (drums); Steve Hindalong (percussion).

| | Pandit Kamalesh Maitra Tabla Tarang--Melody On Drums CD (1996)
Tibetan Singing Bowls songs
$16.39 As volume ten of their World's Musical Traditions set, Smithsonian Folkways released an album featuring Kamalesh Maitra, the last pandit (master) of the tabla tarang, a set of ten to 16 tabla drums (Maitra uses around 11 on this recording), each tuned to a different note, and without the bayan bass drum. The word tarang translates to "waves," which is meant to describe the sound of the drums as they are played. The player uses his palms to strike the drums in quick succession, hopefully to come as close to the human voice as possible in its shifts. On the recording, it becomes obvious how Maitra received his title of Pandit, as his virtuosity is stunning, especially when considering the size of the setup of the drums (a full half-circle around the performer) and the speed with which he is able to play them. The ragas played on this album are all morning ragas, or more specifically late-morning ragas, as all of them are forms of the Todi ragas (making use of the minor second, minor third, and sixth). While the music is wonderfully performed, giving an almost ethereal sound to the album, even true aficionados of North Indian classical music, used to half-hour ragas, can become bored partway through the ...
