The Vitamin label's Ethereal Tribute to U2 reimagines nine tracks by the world-famous Irish pop group as ambient pop. Vocals from Mele, Josafin Glenmark, and Lisa Linehan lend a dreamy quality to the mostly down-tempo electronic arrangements. The tribute's greatest strength is its decision to leave U2's distinctive melodies intact. Too often, compilations that transpose a new genre over another end up sacrificing a song's defining moments for flawed instrumental adventurism. That isn't the case with Ethereal Tribute to U2. "With or Without You" and "One" are standouts, as is a tasteful reworking of "Running to Stand Still" that manages to retain the languid blues of the original, while adding some tasteful drum programming. The upbeat Euro-house of Linehan's "Beautiful Day" isn't as strong as some other electronic mixes of the song that have appeared, but she has a pretty voice that gives her version some resonance. On the minus side, versions of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" and "So Cruel" don't really go anywhere, but they don't take away from the overall tranquility of the album. ~ Johnny Loftus
Personnel: Projectz, Lisa Linehan, Myke Smith (vocals); Mitchell Sigman (guitar).

Ethereal Tribute To U2 album
$10.89 Selections recorded in Le Château d'Eau, Borges, France; Westleton Church, Suffolk, England; and DAT Studios, Cricklewood, London.
One of the two works for which composer Gavin Bryars is best known (the other being "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"), his epochal "The Sinking of the Titanic" had been recorded three times in the 25 years since its creation. The first, for Brian Eno's Obscure label, was a landmark recording, but went swiftly out of print and became a much sought after collector's item, while the third, a relatively bland performance on Point, was widely distributed in the ...

Ethereal Tribute To U2 CD music
$16.95 Includes recordings originally released on Eastern, Columbia, Buddah, Checker, and Revue.
Eddie & Ernie's discography is quite a diaspora, spanning about a decade, 15 singles, almost as many labels, and some releases under names other than Eddie & Ernie. This CD does an admirable job of pulling together 24 tracks (seven of them previously unissued) from their disperse output, forming a good though not great collection of punchy period soul with good harmonizing. It doesn't matter a great deal, but a few of the cuts weren't billed to Eddie & Ernie: there's ...

$8.99 Taylor Dayne's albums were always vehicles for her hit singles, which is why Greatest Hits works so well. All of her biggest hits are included on the disc, as well as a selection of lesser-known songs, making it the only consistently entertaining album Dayne has ever released. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Best Of Giorgio Moroder CD (2001)
Ethereal Tribute To U2 songs
$13.95 Seventeen tracks of classic disco dance-pop. Including 'Stop', 'Looky Looky', 'Underdog', 'Chase' & 'Solitary Man'. 2001 release.
Although he is most often remembered as the production wizard behind Donna Summer's rise to prominence, Giorgio Moroder has enjoyed a successful solo career that has covered everything from bubblegum pop to proto-electronica. This welcome compilation provides a handy thumbnail sketch of Moroder's career. It starts with the pop singles that Moroder recorded as a solo artist: They're all as sugary as can be (especially "Looky Looky," which is heavily reminiscent of early ABBA), but they also show the development of the techniques that would soon make Moroder an in-demand producer: "Underdog" ably mixes a throbbing, danceable beat with its swirling violins and glam rock guitar riffs, and "Son of My Father" makes pioneering ...
