Sonny Stitt New York Jazz CD (1956)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet album for sale Sonny Stitt was so closely identified with Charlie Parker on the alto that even when he played tenor, his style was of the quicker-than-lightning variety with all the notes he could pack in a phrase in his soloing. Which makes listening to him, for all but the most ardent bebop fans, an endurance contest no matter how agile he was. Here, in a 1956 session with Ray Brown and Jo and Jimmy Jones backing him, there is some tempering of the maelstrom that Stitt conjured up on every bandstand. Half the program is ballads, including "The Stars Fell on Alabama," a gorgeous "Body & Soul," and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." While these cuts show an uncharacteristic restraint from Stitt, the midtempo tunes, such as "Down Home Blues," "Alone Together," and "If I Had You," still reveal his insistence on streaking everything into the blue despite a rhythm section that wishes to hold the tunes within recognizable tempos. It's no problem for Stitt; he just plays twice or three times as fast. This is a good session, but like all of Stitt's records, wears thin after about six cuts. ~ Thom Jurek

Thelonious Monk Monk 'Round the World CD (2004)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet buy CD music This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live performances of "Criss Cross," "Rhythm A Ning," and "Nutty" recorded in London, England in 1965.
Given the plethora of live recordings made of Thelonious Monk in the 1960s (when everyone suddenly seemed to recognize his genius 20-plus years after he began composing and playing), this compilation provides a valuable service in bringing together the best of those performances. Between 1961 and 1965 Monk toured regularly with a quartet that featured Charlie Rouse on tenor sax and a revolving bassist and drummer, and was particularly well received (and documented) in Europe. MONK 'ROUND THE WORLD collects seven tracks from those years.
The tunes are among Monk's best, and have rightfully become standards--they will be familiar to anyone with a knowledge of classic jazz. The sprightly, angular sections of "Epistrophy," the stealthy groove-prowl of "Blue Monk," the beautiful ballad "Ruby, My Dear," and the witty, spastic "Rhythm-A-Ning" are included here in excellent versions. The three quartets featured (with Monk and Rouse the constants) display stellar rapport, exploring the quirks and possibilities of Monk's songs. The disc comes with a bonus DVD of in-concert footage, making this a definitive document/package of latter-period Monk.
Incl.A Bonus DVD Of Rare 1965 Concert Footage.
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); John Ore, Butch Warren (bass guitar); Ben Riley, Frankie Dunlop (drums).
Liner Note Author: Kareem Abdul-Jabar.

John Pizzarelli Live at Birdland CDs (2003)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet songs Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by John Pizzarelli.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Jazz Times (6/03, p.131-2) - "...The first gentleman of contemporary jazz - spend five minutes with Pizzarelli and you'll fully appreciate his inimitable warmth, humor and munificence of spirit..."
This is a wonderful, warm-hearted, and effortlessly virtuosic live recording by one of the finest living exponents of pre-bop small-ensemble jazz. With pianist Ray Kennedy and bassist Martin Pizzarelli (and on two songs joined by vocalist Grover Kemble), singer and guitarist John Pizzarelli runs through a generally lightweight but thoroughly charming set of standards, homages, funny stories, and the occasional original tune; the fast tunes are light and frothy, the ballads smooth and gentle, and even the moments that are less than utterly inspired work together with the album's highlights to create a very satisfying whole. John Pizzarelli has a suit sponsor, which tells you something about what to expect of him as a singer: his voice is smooth and warm, offering a nice combination of Chet Baker's timbre and Dean Martin's fullness; as a guitarist you need to know that he favors seven-string guitars and flat-wound strings, leading him naturally to a swinging Django Reinhardt-meets-Freddie Green kind of sound. As for the trio's instrumentation, it's true that when you can comp with this kind of authority you don't technically need a drummer. But on a few tracks a drummer would have filled out the band's sound nicely. Highlights include the group's fun, slightly greasy take on "Frim Fram Sauce" and a great ode to Art Tatum called "Tea for Tatum," as well as a fine original blues composition titled "Headed Out to Vera's." Pizzarelli's own "Oh, How My Heart Beats for You" and "Day I Found You" are also wonderful. But the album's standout track is a limpidly gorgeous rendition of another original, "Better Run Before It's Spring." Pizzarelli is obviously having a blast in the intimate setting of the legendary Birdland club, and so will any jazz lover who takes the time to listen. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Ray Brown Some of My Best Friends Are... Guitarists CD (2002)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet CD music The fifth in Ray Brown's series of recordings pairing his working trio with several different musicians from the same family of instruments (although one volume was exclusively singers) features a half-dozen guitarists, ranging from fellow Oscar Peterson alumni Herb Ellis (who worked with Brown in the pianist's most famous trio) and Ulf Wakenius to veteran Kenny Burrell, as well as seasoned players like John Pizzarelli and Bruce Forman and the rising star Russell Malone. Each song sounds as if the group could be a working quartet, due to the great interaction between the trio and each guest. Pizzarelli shines in a bluesy, strutting take of Duke Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me" (erroneously labeled as Fats Waller's "Squeeze Me") which has a nice series of exchanges between the guitarist and the leader. Ellis brings back memories of the Oscar Peterson Trio with a heated performance of "I Want to Be Happy" during which pianist Geoff Keezer is up to the task of carrying on where Ellis left off. Wakenius is the guest on a particularly moody take of "My Funny Valentine." Burrell, Forman, and Malone also fare nicely on each of their pair of tracks, so it's very easy to recommend this very enjoyable disc. ~ Ken Dryden

Dan Barrett Blue Swing CDs (2000)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet buy CD music This fine nine-piece ensemble is essentially a traditional jazz all-star group. Featuring such luminaries as saxophonist Ray Ogilvie, trumpet player Jon-Erik Kellso, and singer Rebecca Kilgore, the band is led by trombonist Dan Barrett and covers a surprising range of jazz styles, from early New Orleans trad jazz to bebop. On this album, they focus on such classic material as Luis Russell's "Saratoga Shout," James P. Johnson's "Victory Stride," and a charmingly silly rendition of "C'Est Si Bon." Interestingly, there are also arrangements of the 1960s pop hits "Love Potion No. 9" and "Wedding Bell Blues," both of which work better than you'd have any right to expect. Everyone performs beautifully -- the band is tight, but not so tight that the swing is constricted, and as impressive as the soloists are, there's never any grandstanding. Kilgore is the biggest treat on the album, though; her songs are definitely the highlights of the program. Her duet performance of "C'Est Si Bon" (on which she sings in French while guitarist Eddie Erickson echoes her with Stan Freberg-style gibberish) is somehow both funny and sexy, while her more up-tempo renditions of "Christopher Columbus" and "Wedding Bell Blues" skip along with unaffected joy. It would probably be sacrilege to compare her to Ella Fitzgerald, but Kilgore shares with her a sweet, straightforward singing style and a voice as clear and pure as spring water. Fans of mainstream jazz will love everything about this album. ~ Rick Anderson

Daryl Sherman Hundred Million Miracles CD (2003)
Get Rhythm in Your Feet songs Listening to and enjoying the vocals of Daryl Sherman seems almost natural. She's talented, for sure, but it's the joy and sensitivity she instills in each song that impresses one. It doesn't hurt that Sherman has chosen to interpret the songs of Richard Rodgers on A Hundred Million Miracles, nor that she's enlisted the help of guitarists James Chirillo and Joe Cohn and bassist Boots Maleson. Her piano work and a number of guest appearances fill out the arrangements on an hour's worth of music from the classic American songbook. Sherman's rendition of "You Are Too Beautiful" is wonderfully underlined by Ruby Braff's cornet work, while her upbeat version of "Do I Hear a Waltz?" is accented by Chirillo's bouncy lead. She's joined on vocals by Bob Dorough for fun versions of "Everything I've Got Belongs to You" and "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Even with high-profile support, though, Sherman's vocals remain the centerpiece of A Hundred Million Miracles. There's a lovely, seven-minute-plus "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," and the album closes with a cheerful "This Can't Be Love." As one might note from these two songs, even though the lyrics of Rodgers form the connecting thread, his writing partners -- like Lorenz Hart -- also deserve mention. A Hundred Million Miracles is beautifully realized and Sherman's singing is an absolute joy. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
