For those who like the hits and nothing else, this box set retrospective of the first two-thirds of 2002 by a handful of artists is for you. Here are 32 tracks compiled on three CDs of the brightest and tightest in Nash Vegas -- with a few surprises. Containing hits ranging from Tim McGraw's "Down On The Farm," and Wynonna's "No One Else On Earth," to "Hog Wild," by Hank Jr, Disc One hosts a few nut job choices like Junior Brown's "Highway Patrol." Disc Two leads off with a real surprise in Lyle Lovett's "She's No Lady," which was a hit perhaps on NPR, but also features Jo Dee Messina's smash "You're Not In Kansas Anymore," and Hal Ketchum's "Mama Knows The Highway." The final slab in this set contains tracks by LeAnn Rimes ("Big Deal" ), and Sawyer Brown "("The Night Won't Last Forever"). ~ Thom Jurek

| | Lester Flatt Flatt On Victor & More... CDs (1999) (Import) Germany
Cool Country Hits songs
$162.25 It started as early as 1966, when Earl Scruggs convinced his partner, Lester Flatt, to record some songs outside of the bluegrass tradition. Among them were some Bobby Bare cuts: "Passing Through," "Shut Your Face, I'm Talking to Your Head," "Before You Die," and "Take Me Home to Mama." In the same year there was the song that Ralph Stanley would make his signature, Waylon Jennings' "Man of Constant Sorrow." In 1967 it was Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," and in 1968 it was Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35," produced by Bob Johnston, Dylan's producer. And in 1969, amid the ringing electric guitars of Randy Scruggs, Charlie McCoy's harmonica, Charlie Daniels' rhythm guitar, and others bluegrass "innovations," it was over. Arguably the most famous duo in the history of bluegrass -- eclipsing even the profile of the music's founders, Bill Monroe (their former employer) and Ralph Stanley in the early '60s -- Flatt & Scruggs had a bitter parting of ways that would not be mended until Flatt was on his deathbed ten years later. This Bear Family set compiles the aforementioned tracks and five and a half more CDs, including Flatt's last live date, all recorded for RCA between 1969 and 1978. Flatt, by far the more traditional of the two men, and ten years Scruggs' senior, went to record with Mac Wiseman, Josh Graves, Marty Stuart, and a host of other traditional musicians -- including Bill Monroe -- on over ten albums' worth of material both original and from the bluegrass canon. None of it matches the majesty of Flatt & Scruggs at their peak -- and neither does Scruggs' -- but it is all worthwhile as a way of looking at how bluegrass music survived a particularly tumultuous era. Certainly, collectors will find the most use for these recordings, but their appeal cannot be denied because Flatt was the most original singer in the history of the music and remains so. His voice was far deeper than most, and his phrasing reflected the same mountains he grew up in until the end, no matter what he was singing. This set may not be for everyone, but for those who sprung for the other Flatt & Scruggs boxes, or have found them to be irresistible, this is fine traditional country music. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Peter, Paul & Mary Lifelines CD (1995)
Cool Country Hits CD music
$6.40 Includes liner notes by Peter, Paul & Mary, Studs Terkel and David Halberstam.
After leaving their longtime label home at Warner Bros. Records following the 1978 LP Reunion, Peter, Paul & Mary went the independent, self-releasing route before signing to start-up company Gold Castle for 1986's No Easy to Walk to Freedom. Two albums later, Gold Castle had gone belly up, and the trio returned to Warner on a one-off basis for their second children's album, Peter, Paul & Mommy, Too, in 1993. The project went sufficiently well for the group to re-sign to Warner for a lengthier term, and the first fruits of that contract is LifeLines, which seems intended as something of a rebirth of Peter, Paul & Mary as well as a re-affirmation of their place in popular music. The format is the familiar one of filling a disc with guest stars, but this time that format has been used not to add a sense of trendiness to a veteran act, but rather to position it within a tradition. Peter, Paul & Mary always served as a bridge, connecting the older folk tradition of the Weavers and Woody Guthrie to the '60s folk revival, connecting the commercial and topical wings of that revival, and connecting developing artists to larger audiences. They do all those things deliberately on LifeLines, and a few other things besides. Peter Yarrow's anthemic "River of Jordan," which first appeared on his solo album Peter in 1972, concludes the album by combining Peter, Paul & Mary with the surviving Weavers, Pete Seeger, Fred Hellerman, and Ronnie Gilbert; three songs earlier, they had brought in Guthrie protégé Ramblin' Jack Elliott to join them on Guthrie's "Deportee." They also mix things up with some of their contemporaries: Dave Van Ronk joins in on a medley of "Wanderin'" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"; Judy Collins duets with Yarrow on his "Take the Chance"; and Yarrow combines with Richie Havens and the Simon Sisters (Carly Simon and Lucy Simon) on his evergreen "The Great Mandala (The Wheel of Life)," first heard on Peter, Paul & Mary's Album 1700 in 1967. And they are joined by artists they have influenced: Noel Paul Stookey sings his "For the Love of it All" with Emmylou Harris; and Mary Travers duets with Holly Near on "Home Is Where the Heart Is" and with John Gorka on "24 Green Street." (In a match-up without category, she also pairs with B.B. King on "House of the Rising Sun.") Just as they introduced many '60s listeners to songwriters Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver, here Peter, Paul & Mary showcase up-and-comers Buddy Mondlock ("The Kid"), Sally Fingerett ("Home Is Where the Heart Is"), John Fischer ("24 Green Street"), and Cheryl Wheeler ("75 Septembers"), all worthy writers. And they also find ...
