These 18 tracks (all but one of them actually recorded between 1976 and 1978) might be of more interest to specialized fans than demos usually are, as many of the songs didn't make it onto Crawler's two albums. (The sole 1975 track, "Sweet, Sweet Judy," is more a Rabbit Bundrick solo boogie that happened to feature the other members of Crawler, cut shortly before Bundrick joined the band.) The sound is good and the performances not much different, indeed often barely different, from what you would expect of studio sounds from that era, though sometimes the sound is thin and boxy. The catch is that the music isn't very interesting, though it's not terrible. It's average, perhaps slightly sub-average, mid-'70s blues-flavored British rock. It sounds more like a support band for Free than Free itself, but there are similarities, particularly in the more downbeat material, like "Sweet Sister," "Sail On," and "Cold, Cold World." ~ Richie Unterberger

Demo Anthology 1975-1978 music CDs
$12.23 There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but the melodic charms and punchy pop hooks of this album are a timeless treat.
2008 digitally remastered edition of the debut album from the Memphis band that tried to ride the New Wave of Power Pop of the time, but failed to catch fire across the country. Their hook-laden Raspberries-like legacy is not forgotten by fans of the period and this CD release includes two bonus tracks: "She Say Yea" and "Break ...
| | Automatic Man CD (1976)
Demo Anthology 1975-1978 songs
$13.09 Space rockers Automatic Man (featuring Santanna's dynamite drummer, Michael Shrieve) get their 1976 debut remastered in all its progressive glory.
After making his name with Santana (remember his solo on "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock?), drummer Michael Shrieve did some experimenting with Stomu Yamashta and then turned to this four-piece, which was led by singer/keyboard player Bayete. Their sound is progressive rock with a spacy, spiritual bent (titles include "Atlantis Rising" and "Interstellar Tracking Devices"), which means swirling synthesizers, biting lead guitar playing (courtesy of Pat Thrall), and lyrics about angels and heaven and how "worldly things keep us apart." The drumming is good and it's high in the mix, but after his prominent role in Santana, one expected more in the way of leadership from Shrieve, and this group ultimately was as faceless as the alien image on the front cover. ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Demo Anthology 1975-1978 CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol ...
