Charlie Tate and Matt Harris (aka DJ Shuff) extend a relationship with U.S. label Om first forged with the licensing of the preceding long-player, Nufoundfunk, from Second Skin, signing exclusively to the label for their fourth album. Kooba's Indian Summer makes a valiant effort to keep the sun shining through the overcast skies of South London via some upbeat R&B -- swelling their ranks with a string of vocalists including Cleo Bartlett, longtime spar Melissa Heathcote, and Soulstice's Gina Rene. The album paces itself well, gradually building up from the watery introduction of "Honey Locust" through the hazy future soul of "Losing You" to the cheerful house of the title. From broken beat to the slick street soul of "If I Could," no genre is beyond the reach of the duo, Shuff even finding time to get scratchadelic on the Roots Manuva's loping contribution to "Barefoot." It is the snake-hipped rhythms of "Blue Mosque" that steal the show, however, deviant percussion dancing around Arabian instrumentation that spins in and out of the mix like a sandstorm. Impressive indeed, with these jacks of all trades delivering another slick album good for the car, crib, club, or even those Indian summer barbecues. ~ Kingsley Marshall

Indian Summer album
$10.15 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Mark Farina.
On top of his game when this mix dropped in 1999, Mark Farina had risen to the rank of superstar DJ -- at least within the States, and particularly on the West Coast and in Chicago -- and represents his newfound status on San Francisco Sessions. The Om-released mix features 14 house tracks, many of them quite funky and some of them a bit jazzy. Overall, San Francisco Sessions accurately represents the Bay Area ...

Indian Summer music CDs
$25.09 The second in the series of "soulful deep house lounging" doesn't include a wealth of important, individualistic tracks, but many of the inclusions are fine: Jody Watley's languorous vocal on "Saturday Night Experience" begins the first disc with class and the Blaze remix of Ananda Project's "Breaking Down" keeps the focus on New York/New Jersey garage. Other highlights by Miguel Migs (the sublime "Dubpusher") and Mondo Grosso keep the grooves deep on the first disc, while the second breaks out of the gate with "MAW's Theme" and keeps on pushing with tracks from Fantastic Plastic Machine, fellow Japanese producer ...

| | Keith Sweat I'll Give All My Love To You CD (1990)
Indian Summer music CDs
$8.69 The glut of faceless, interchangeable new jack swing artists plaguing urban contemporary radio in the early '90s served one useful purpose: they reminded you how exciting the originators of the style (Guy, Bobby Brown, and Keith Sweat, among others) could be. When Sweat's overdue sophomore effort, I'll Give All My Love to You, was released in 1990, it exposed countless new jack automations for the unimaginative frauds they were. Though not quite as strong as 1987's Make It Last Forever, this is a respectable disc that sounds consistently heartfelt and sincere. The hard electro-funk ...
