Arranger: Richard Hewson. "In my heart there is plenty of room," sings Xavier Boyer in "Wallpaper for the Soul," "for everyone to kill the gloom." This could be a mission statement for the band's breezy, clean, melodic pop/rock stylings. Despite the album's title, Boyer's fey, breathy vocals don't have enough passion or grit to qualify as truly soulful; the band's sound, which is often sweetened by strings, is lightweight and refined instead of earthy, sensual, or intense. The music is still appealing, however, even though it sometimes threatens to recede into the background just like wallpaper. More fully realized and bolstered with a stronger song selection than its predecessor, Wallpaper for the Soul is a well-crafted collection of infectious tunes that won't necessarily stick with you for years to come, but should be quite enjoyable while you're listening. As an additional point of interest, it should be noted that arranger Richard Hawson (the Beatles, Nick Drake, the first James Taylor album) worked with the band on five of this album's songs. ~ Todd KristelUncut (01/04, pp.84-7) - Ranked #10 in Uncut's "Albums Of The Year 2003" Uncut (6/03, p.124) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Tahiti 80 marry blissful '70s/'80s AOR with up-to-the-minute techniques. Their music is both timeless and timely..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/03, p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It's a glorious entente of old and new technology..." Introduction by: George Martin. Photographer: Richard Avedon. Apparently, there was a gap in the Beatles' catalog, after all -- all the big hits weren't on one tidy, single-disc compilation. Wallpaper For The Soul
$13.15 2002 debut album for hotly tipped UK dance/garage act. Described as, 'a staggeringly eloquent & fearlessly honest snapshot of gritty street-level existence, as experienced by an ordinary bloke' & 'a milestone, the real voice of British youth set down on record'.
Personnel: Kevin Mark Trail (vocals). Audio Mixer: Mike Skinner . Arranger: Mike Skinner . When Streets tracks first appeared in DJ sets and on garage mix albums circa 2000, they made for an interesting change of pace; instead of hyper-speed ragga chatting or candy-coated divas (or both), listeners heard banging tracks hosted by a strangely conversational bloke with a mock cockney accent and a half-singing, half-rapping delivery. It was Mike Skinner, producer and MC, the half-clued-up, half-clueless voice behind club hits "Has It Come to This?" and "Let's Push Things Forward." Facing an entire full-length of Streets tracks hardly sounded like a pleasant prospect, but Skinner's debut, Original Pirate Material, is an excellent listen -- and almost as good as the heavy-handed hype would make you think. Unlike most garage LPs, it's certainly not a substitute for a night out; it's more a statement on modern-day British youth, complete with all the references to Playstations, Indian takeaway, and copious amounts of cannabis you'd expect. Skinner also has a refreshing way of writing songs, not tracks, that immediately distinguishes him from most in the garage scene. True, describing his delivery as rapping would be giving an undeserved compliment (you surely wouldn't hear any American rappers dropping bombs like this line: "I wholeheartedly agree with your viewpoint"). ...

Wallpaper For The Soul
$10.25 "There are two excellent discs here, but it is on the more recent of the two (The Vallejo Demos) that the power of Bianchi's compelling songwriting becomes obvious; minus the interesting keyboard blips and distortion that decorate much of Eleven Demos By Adam Bianchi, Bianchi's arrestingly intimate storytelling technique is free to bask in the glow of its own gentle light. Situated somewhere near the unlikely intersection of Hank Williams and Elliot Smith, Bianchi comes off as a less-ambitious (but easily capable) challenger to a slot currently occupied by Damien Jurado; if he sticks to what he's been doing, the title is his for the taking."8 Blips out of 10 (Growth Potential 9/10) - Paul B. Sikes of Under The Radar "Adam Bianchi's The Vallejo Demos includes "Requiem for John Fahey," a instrumental which poignantly emulates Fahey in his memory. Bianchi sings on the rest of the 8-track CD, yet his songs carry the spirit of Fahey's music - they draw on the ghosts of the past to create music that feels very alive today. The Vallejo Demos are possessed by memories of American folk musics past; it shows in the acoustic guitars, banjos and harmonicas Bianchi plays, but also in the how the lyrics echo gospel, blues and folk traditions. Yet these songs, recorded by Bianchi at his home last summer, don't come off like exercises in style or like trips down memory lane. Instead they're alive with real human stories and feelings. Love, loss, sadness, mortality...these are timeless themes that bridge generations, and in Bianchi's hands they're rendered powerfully. The Vallejo Demos ...
