MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN, despite being Hot Hot Heat's first full-length album, is a bright, assured blast of fresh air that's at its dayglo best on tracks such as the tricky pop of "Naked in the City Again" and the punky "Bandages." But the strong hint that Hot Hot Heat have more to offer than your everyday retro-wavers is contained in the wiry guitar sounds of "Save Us S.O.S." and the atmospheric closer "Cairo," as well as in the off-kilter rhythms and smart, wry lyrics that pop up throughout.
More than new wave revivalists with an innate talent for catchy songs, Hot Hot Heat blend angular post-punk twitch with danceable pop, making a good case for white dopes on punk to get on the good foot. Sub Pop. 2002.
OK, name a band of Canadians with ska/punk/New Wave overtones, snappy lyrics and a catchy way with a tune. If you were thinking Barenaked Ladies, think again--Hot Hot Heat are all of the above, but with the added advantage of Steve Bays's patented Ray Davies-in-a-blender hiccupped vocals and a musical edge given extra depth by producer Jack Endino's nuanced production. There are echoes of '80s skinny-tie pop here, to be sure, but the combination of quirkiness, energy, and wit most obviously recalls British new wavers XTC and their particular brand of multi-layered new wave/art-rock.

Hot Hot Heat is clearly a band to watch. They've been around for a bit, but their new incarnation is really starting to shine. This album is full of tightly wound, nervy, new-wave pop with a very 21st-century indie-rock edge. Imagine Robert Smith fronting XTC... in a good way :) It doesn't take long to get used to Steve Bays' slightly off kilter vocals, and from there on the songs will stick in your head like glue. I read the band has signed to Warner Bros. and fully expect them to be a mainstream success. They deserve it!

this album is so fun. its a must have. this album will make you hate yourself for not hearing about hot hot heat earlier..hooks and melodies that will have you tapping your foot all day. buy it. it made my top five albums of 2002

i love every single song on this album. like everyone else says, the songs are really catchy and extremely fun. songs like "bandages" and "talk to me dance with me" are really fun dance songs. and every other song on make up the breakdown is great to. it's worth the buy.
