CRUEL SMILE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.
CRUEL SMILE is a limited-edition companion piece to Elvis Costello's other 2002 release WHEN I WAS CRUEL, which was a return to rock-oriented tunes after dalliances with Anne Sofie Von Otter and Burt Bacharach. The main ties to WHEN I WAS CRUEL are a handful of live recordings of songs from that album and some remixed versions. Beyond those, CRUEL SMILE lives and breathes on its own, offering "When I Was Cruel No. 1," where it's predecessor contained only "No. 2," which is an entirely different composition. Elvis covers the Charlie Chaplin chestnut "Smile" in two different versions, includes live versions of some of his own classics like "Watching the Detectives" and "Uncomplicated," and offers the previously unheard song "Oh Well." It's recommended that you pick up WHEN I WAS CRUEL first, but even as a stand-alone effort, CRUEL SMILE is quite the engaging endeavor.

$26.79 The 2001 edition of SPIKE comes with a bonus disc of rare material including demos and alternative versions of songs.
On his first album for Warner Brothers, Costello lived up to his new role as "the beloved entertainer", moving further away from his new-wave background with a sprawling collection of songs in a diverse range of musical styles. Spike takes in pure pop ("Veronica"), cod-funk ("Chewing Gum"), gospel ("Deep Dark Truthful Mirror"), Irish folk ("Any King's Shilling") and rockabilly ("Pads, Paws And Claws"), alongside the venomous politicizing of "Let Him Dangle" and ...

$34.89 The Eternals' impressive debut could just as easily be entitled "Sondheim in Dub" or "The Congos Meet the Headhunters Inna Midwest Soundclash." That alone should separate this from the remainder of Chicago-based records that feature the studio skills of John McEntire and Casey Rice. It could also be called the fifth Trenchmouth record; multi-instrumentalists Damon Locks and Wayne Montana were in that relatively rock-oriented ...

Cruel Smile
$15.39 All the clichés ever used about instrumental prog rock at its best would be appropriate here -- "soaring," "anthemic," "powerful," "gorgeous," "cosmic," and so on. In truth, the CD itself builds on such clichés, but that's good news for anyone who wants to revisit the glory days of the genre -- or find out why this type of music still has so many fans. The veteran Djam Karet quartet (here bolstered by a second bassist) is blessed with two superb electric guitarists who also double on analog and digital synths, ...

$19.19 Since bursting into the world in the late 70s as a punk-driven bass evangelist, Sweden's Ulf "Rockis" Ivarrson has since been on a relentless voyage of musical discovery while paying his dues to pay the rent. Through early 80s bands like The Quiet, playing the blues with the Eivon Boogie Band, backing up Swedish guitar hero Clas Yngstrom in his group Sky High or a host of sessions, Ulf nurtured a growing desire to uncork an inner vision which sounded nothing like any of these lucratively-popular positions. After a stint with world music-techno marauders Hedningama, where he pioneered a new instrument called the bass mandora, Ulf took the plunge in the late '90s and started Beatundercontrol. Conventional song structures went out the window as he explored his fixations with the mighty dub, noise and experimental music ...
