| | Eddie Harris Tale Of Two Cities CD Eddie Harris Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This CD from the short-lived Night label features the talented tenor Eddie Harris on two different occasions. From 1978 Harris is caught live at Keystone Korner in San Francisco, playing four superior standards plus his famous hit "Listen Here" while joined by pianist Jack Wilson, bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Eddie Marshall. The three Chicago cuts from 1983 ("Chicago Serenade," "Sonnymoon for Two" and "Illusionary Dreams") not only showcase him on tenor but electric sax, some reed trumpet, piano and vocals along with pianist Rob Schneiderman, bassist Louis Spears and drummer Albert "Tootle" Heath. The recording quality is good and Harris sounds somewhat inspired on both occasions, emphasizing his roots in bebop while still sounding contemporary and original. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded live at Keystone Korner, San Francisco, California and Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, Chicago, Illinois in 1978 and 1983.
Personnel: Eddie Harris (vocals, tenor saxophone, electric saxophone, trumpet, piano); Rob Schneiderman, Jack Wilson (piano); Louis Spears, Herbioe Lewis (bass); Albert Heath, Eddie Marshall (drums).
JazzTimes (6/91) - "Harris' ability to accumulate energy and swing on tenor saxophone and to vary dynamics in the course of a solo is demonstrated in `Chicago Serenade'...a taste of Harris's electric saxophone, resembles a pop/soul tune but develops irresistable jazz feeling." Mojo (Publisher) (7/03, p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The electric sax pioneer really gets down on this album....Truly astonishing..." Tale Of Two Cities album
$10.05 This LP (whose contents have been reissued on CD) features a reunion between tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell; they revisit "If I Could Be with You," a song they had recorded together in a classic version back in 1929. Russell was beginning to perform much more modern material than the Dixieland music associated with the Eddie Condon ...
| | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Man Who Cried Fire CD (2002)
Tale Of Two Cities CD music
$10.39 Perhaps more than any other player, Rahsaan Roland Kirk embodied the entire history of not only jazz but 20th century American music in his playing. No matter which of the many horns he played (more often than not three at once), he would cut through an original composition, something from the current pop repertoire, or a jazz or R&B nugget that hadn't been heard in a while, and open the floodgates, bringing all of the other musics he knew to bear on the present selection. And Kirk was not one for excess; his humor, his fire, and his soulfulness were always displayed with great tenderness and taste. This set, originally issued on Joel Dorn's Night Records label in 1991, features a series of unreleased live performances from the mid-'70s. There are six from the Keystone in San Francisco, one from the Olympia Theater in Paris, and one from the It Club in Los Angeles. Sidemen include future bright lights like pianists Hilton Ruiz and Ron Burton, trombonist Steve Turre, bassist ...

| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Tale Of Two Cities songs
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner ...

After Elton released 9 records in a four year span and undertook massive tours as well, GREATEST HITS was the second album he put out in 1974. The unprecedented success John had with lyricist Bernie Taupin resulted in a compilation of ten songs of which nine easily landed in Billboard's Top 20 at one point. John's ...
