Director Ridley Scott's atmospheric first feature film, set during the Napoleonic Wars, follows a pair of French officers as they fight a series of increasingly vicious duels. "To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists, trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage." Thus wrote Joseph Conrad in the opening paragraphs of the story that provides the basis for Ridley Scott's first feature. During the era of the Napoleonic wars, a conflict arises between two of the emperor's cavalry officers when one of them, the aristocratic Lt. D'Hubert (Keith Carradine), is sent by his superior to deliver the message to commoner Lt. Ferraud (Harvey Keitel) that he's to be placed under house arrest for having wounded a man in another duel. Since Ferraud is with a woman at the time, he takes offense at the intrusion and challenges D'Hubert to a duel. Their match, though fierce, is without resolution. Whenever their paths cross, they continue their battle, fighting a series of six duels over the course of 14 years, paralleling Napoleon's major battles of the period. Scott's meditation focuses on the absurd vanity behind the old European code of honor--and the nature of warfare itself. All the distinguishing marks of Scott's later work is already on display here, from the meticulous re-creation of period costume, decor, and behavior to the lush, carefully composed photography. THE DUELLISTS was shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 1977.

This film is like a great painting come to life! It has every aspect of great filmmaking in perfect balance.
Cinematography, costumes, script, terrific acting, great locations and direction, you name it! Keitel is an
exquisite madman, but with honor and
sadness. A superbly powerful performance by Mr. Keitel! A sadly overlooked film of great depth.

Conrad put down the "bones" of this film, but it took Ridley Scott to bring it to life. Yes, Scott admits that he took a lot of the views from painters of the day and that Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" was a model. I also seemed to detect echos of "The
Draftsman's Contract" in there. The story is as old as "The Sharks and The Jets". Well, it's just one of my very favorite pictures of all time and Number One for my "Want List".

After "Alien" and "Blade runner" I became a Scott devote, and felt that "The Duellists" played in the same league. Fortunately I taped it on VCR when I first saw it some 10 years ago. Now that I am throwing out all the old tapes, at long last this classic is to reenter my collection on DVD. A true *MUST* buy, not to be missed by any genuine cineast (movie connoisseur).

I saw this one on TV after having seen both "Blade Runner" & "Alien" and I loved it at first sight. The only thing bothering is that it havent yet appeared on DVD (thank God I taped it) I STRONGLY recommend this one for all true movie lovers.
